Brigadier General Jack James serves as Commanding General of the 53d Troop Command, NY Army National Guard. In this capacity he commands over 4,000 Soldiers in two Brigades consisting of Engineer, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Military Police, and Signal battalions, a Digital Liaison Detachment, two Civil Support Teams, and a Cyber Protection Team.
BG James was commissioned in 1992 and has held positions including attack helicopter platoon leader, company executive officer, attack helicopter troop commander, battalion logistic officer, battalion operations officer and executive officer, and brigade operations officer. He commanded the 642d Aviation Support Battalion before leading the 42d Combat Aviation Brigade from 2014-2019.
He is a graduate of the Army Aviation Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Combined Arms Services Staff School, Command & General Staff College, Air War College, and the Army War College. BG James is a Master Army Aviator and is rated in the AH-64, AH-1, UH-60, and UH-1 aircraft.
BG James is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and earned a Master of Business Administration from New York University. He is a Distinguished Graduate of the Army War College, where he earned a Master of Strategic Studies.
BG James’s awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, Humanitarian Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, and the NATO Medal. He also holds the Master Army Aviator Badge, Parachutist Badge and Air Assault Badge.
BG James is married to the former Lesia Koropey and has three children.
