14th Infantry Regiment (see 14.html for early information), 3d Battalion (less Company M), redesignated 102nd Antitank Battalion 1 September 1940.

Inducted into Federal service 13 January 1941 at Hempstead.

Redesignated 24 July 1941 as the 102d Infantry Battalion, Antitank.

Redesignated 15 December 1941 as the 802d Tank Destroyer Battalion. Inactivated 1 December 1945 at the New York Port of Embarkation.

Redesignated 27 September 1946 as the 802d Tank Battalion.

Redesignated as the 10lst Military Police Battalion, organized and Federally recognized 15 December 1947 with Headquarters at Freeport.

Redesignated as the 142d Tank Battalion and assigned to the 42d Infantry Division 1 September 1950.

Relieved from the 42d Infantry Division 16 March 1959 and reorganized as the 142d Armor, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System.

Converted and redesignated 1 April 1975 as the 242d Infantry, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System.

COAT OF ARMS

Shield: Azure, in sinister chief an old Infantry bugle and in dexter base a fleur-de-lis argent.

Crest: That for the regiments and separate battalions of the New York National Guard: On a wreath of the colors, argent and azure, the full-rigged ship "Half Moon," all proper.

Motto: Valor and Force.

Symbolism: The shield is blue for infantry. The round bugle was the insignia of the Infantry during the Civil War and the fleur-de-lis represents service in France during World War 1.
