Fort Newport Fort Newport: French and Indian War, On the Oneida Carry/Portage (Rome). Construction started August 1756. A square wooden stockade fort with corner bastions, above Wood Creek between Ft Wood Creek and Fort Williams. Destroyed by British 20 Aug 1756 after French took Oswego. Site is on present Calvert Street between Arsenal Street and Brewer Alley in Rome. See Map at ONEIDA Carry Forts.
