12th Regiment Cavalry, NY Volunteers Guidons, Civil War

The NYS Battle Flag Collection includes seven guidons carried by the 12th Cavalry. Each silk swallowtail guidon conforms to the “stars and stripes” pattern prescribed in General Order No. 4, dated January 18, 1862. Two flags, 2004.21 and 2004.28, were sewn between 2 layers of nylon netting, in 1974 and 1975 respectively, matching the colors of the flag with different colors of net. The lighter areas of netting show areas of loss in the original flag. The other five flags show considerable wear and losses.
