The New York State Battle Flag Collection includes two flank markers carried by the 18th Regiment Cavalry, NY Volunteers. The blue, silk flank markers both have losses to the center and along the fly edge. Originally both flags featured painted inscriptions in gold, shadowed in red, along the top, "N.Y.S.V.," and bottom, "CAVALRY.". Also, each featured a red painted shield in the center, framed with a gold painted border, complete with the regiment’s numeric designation painted in gold and shadowed in crimson. “N.Y.S.V.” and “CAVALRY.” are in mirror image on the reverse while the numeric designation reads left to right on the reverse.

See the 18th Cavlary History Page for more information about this unit.
