The New York State Battle Flag Preservation Project not only includes a program of care for the flags but also addresses the collection’s educational and interpretive needs. Flags furled upon their staffs, massed in exhibit cases, may evoke a sense of awe in the spectator, but provide little else to aid in an understanding or appreciation of them. The flags are more than symbols of a regiment and its patriotism. As artifacts they illustrate artistry, technology and elements of social history. There are a number of ways these elements are presented to the public, including interpretive exhibits. Each Battle Flag Preservation Project exhibit enhances our knowledge of New York State’s role in the various conflicts represented, honors all the New Yorkers who served their state and country, and presents the preserved, tangible reminders of their sacrifice.
