The 39th Regiment, or “Garibaldi Guard,” organized in New York City under Colonel Frederick George D’tassy and mustered into service for three years at Washington D.C. on June 6, 1861. The companies consisted of Germans, Hungarians, Swiss, Italians, Frenchman, Spaniards, and Portuguese. Very little remains from this national color – pieces from the canton, a section of fringe, a light blue ribbon inscribed “39tc Regt. N.Y.St. Vols.,” and an elaborate red silk battle streamer with two bands and an overleaf. The bands include printed battle honors from Bull Run (July 21, 1861) to Cold Harbor (June 2, 1864) while the overleaf includes the printed inscription, “Battles in welchen das 39the Regiment N.Y.S.V. Garibaldi Guard true und tapfer gefochten hat,” or translated, “Battles in which the 39th Regiment N.Y.S.V. Garibaldi Guard true and bravely fought.” (2001.0077)
