11th Artillery Regiment
Civil War

History
The following is taken from New York in the War of the Rebellion, 11th ed. Frederick Phisterer. Albany: J. B. Lyon Company, 1912.

Organization not completed.

Captain Wm. B. Barnes, 4th Artillery, was appointed Colonel, and authorized to recruit this regiment, February 7, 1863, with headquarters at Rochester. July 1st the companies organized were formed into a battalion. The organization of the regiment, though continued, was, however, not completed, the authority under which Colonel Barnes acted being revoked July 25, 1863. Four companies, A, B, C and D, had been organized, when the War Department revoked all orders issued for the recruitment of this regiment, and ordered the transfer of the organized companies to the 10th, and a few days later to the 4th, Artillery. July 29, 1863, a number of men recruited for this, the 11th regiment, but not assigned to companies, were transferred to the 13th Artillery. The four organized companies, commanded by Capts. Wm. Church, Seward F. Gould, Henry P. Merrill and Wm. F. Goodwin, respectively, left the State June 24, 1863, and took part in the Pennsylvania Campaign of June and July, 1863, under Major Barnes, serving in the Department of Susquehanna. At the close of this campaign the companies proceeded to New York city and were stationed at Forts Richmond, Hamilton and Sandy Hook in New York harbor, Department of the East. Here the transfer took place and the companies became Companies I, K, L and M, respectively, of the 4th N. Y. Volunteer Artillery, October 16, 1863.
