Diary of Royal George Kinner
The following is from an old book found in a suitcase containing papers,
diaries and photographs belonging to the Kinner family of Branchport and Penn
Yan, New York. This handwritten diary belonged to Royal George Kinner, a Civil
War soldier from Penn Yan. It was originally donated by Barbara Kinner Ekiss
to the Santa Clara County Historical and Genealogical Society and now resides
at the Yates County Genealogical & Historical Society. Many thanks to Shari
Raymond for transcription.
Company “C” 44th Regt N.Y. Vol Infantry was organized by Capt.
B. Munger and mustered into the U.S. Service October third 1862. at Albany N.Y.
joined the Regt at (Antietam) after the battle at that place has been to this
date September 8th 1864. engaging in battle at the following named places Fredericksburg.
Chancellorville Middleburg. Gettysburg Rapp ahamock Station Mine Run Wilderness.
Sound Hill Spotsylvania. Bethesada Church and Cold Harbor. ( ? ) Bottom, Petersburg
and Weldon Rail Road

Enlisted at Italy Yates Co. N.Y. August seventh 1862 for three years by E.B
James was left behind sick at the battle of Fredericksburg Va. Dec 13th 1862
was sent to Corps Hospital April 27 1863 was transferred to Invalid Corps July
8th 1863

Enlisted at Italy Yates Co. N.Y. on the seventh day of August 1862 with E.B.
James was engaged in battle of Fredg’ Va. Dec. 13th 1862 was engaged in
battle of Gettysburg Pa. July 2nd 1863 was engaged in the battle of the Wilderness
Spotsylvania Cold Harbor and before Petersburg and Weldon R.R. Va. is doing
duty at this date Sept. 8 1864

Enlisted at Penn Yan Yates Co. N.Y. on the thirtieth day of August 1862 with
B. Munger was made Corporal when the Co was organized. was very sick in Hosp.
at time of battle of Fredericksburg Va. was promoted to Sgt. Nov. 28th 1862
was en- gaged in battle of Gettysburg Pa. July 2, 1863 has been on duty to this
date Sept 8 1864 was engaged in battle of the Wilderness Cold Harbor Spotsylvania
Petersburg and Weldon R.R.
James Barren
Enlisted at Penn Yan Yates Co. N.Y. on the first day of Sept. 1862 with Chas.
Kelly was engaged in battle of Frederic- ksburg Dec 13th 1862 was reduced to
the ranks Dec 29th 1862 for misbehavior before the enemy Dec 13th 1862 left
the Co. without leave at Chancellorville April 30th 1863 returned to the Co.
Oct 6th 1863 left the Co. before the battle of the Wilderness has not been seen
from since. Dropped from the Rolls as a Deserter.

Enlisted at Penn Yan Yates Co. N.Y. on the thirtieth day of August 1862 with
B. Munger fell out on march from (Warrinton) Va. Nov. 17th 1862 and was taken
prisoner in by the “rebe” was discharged from service from camp
parole Dec 28th 1862

Enlisted at Italy Yates Co. N.Y. on the 16th day of August 1862 was left behind
sick at the battle of Fredericksburg Va. Dec 13th 1862 afterward detailed as
Pioneer was engaged in battles of Wilderness Spotsylvania Cold Harbor and Petersburg
at this date sick Sept 8 1864

Enlisted at Penn Yan Yates Co. N.Y. on the 21st day of August 1862 was engaged
in battle of Fredericksburg Dec 13th 1862 and was severely wounded in the leg
which was amputated discharged the service on account of disability April 7th

at Alexandria Va. of Pneumonia on the 3rd day of March 1864

E B Knox took a musket and was engaged in battle of Fredericksburg Va. Dec 13th
1862 was wounded below the knee returned to the Company the 11th day of March
1863 has since served as Drummer is now on duty as City Point in Hospital Sept

a first rate soldier
