71st Infantry Regiment Back to 71st Regiment During the Civil War
The Seventy-first New York Infantry, or "second Excelsior," was organized at Camp Scott, Staten Island, New York, as the second regiment of Sickles's brigade in June, 1861. The men left for Washington July 23d. The this photograph shows a group off duty, lunging in the bight sunshine near their canvas houses-in this case "A" tents. They accompanied McClellan to the Peninsula, and served in all the great battles of the Army of the Potomac until they were mustered out at New York City, July 30, 1864. This regiment lost five officers and eighty-three enlisted men killed an mortally wounded, and two officers and seventy-three enlisted men by disease.
