New York Naval Militia

The naval militia consists of two battalions and two separate divisions, one of which, the first, has since been disbanded. It is commanded under the orders of the Governor by one captain, assisted by a suitable staff.

The histories of these organizations prior to the war follow:

Headquarters Naval Mttitia, U. S. S. " New Hampshire" foot East Twenty-eighth street, New York city.

FIRST NAVAL BATTALION.

Naval Militia Ship " New Hampshire," foot East Twenty-eighth street, New York city.

The battalion was organized, June 20, 1891, and performed duty for the state during the quarantine troubles in September, 1892. and during the Spanish-American war on coast signal service, guarding mine fields at Willet's Point, and on patrol duty in New York harbor.

It performed duty for the United States during the Spanish- American war in the United States navy aboard the " Yankee," Nahant" and other vessels, and in the United States auxiliary naval force aboard various vessels.

SECOND NAVAL BATTALION.

Headquarters, foot of Fifty-sixth street, Brooklyn.

The battalion was organized, July 0, 1897, and performed duty for the state during the Spanish-American war on coast signal service, guarding mine fields at WillePs Point, and on patrol duty in New Y'ork harbor aboard various vessels.

It performed duty for the United States during the Spanish-American war in the United States navy aboard the " Jason" and other vessels and in the United States auxiliary naval force aboard the " Aileen," "Elfrida, " " Enquirer," " Huntress," " Kanawha," " New Hampshire," " Restless " and " Sylvia."

FIRST SEPARATE NAVAL DIVISION.

This division was organized, April 15, 1898; its headquarters were on the naval militia ship " New Hampshire," and it was disbanded, February 15, 1899.

SECOND SEPARATE NAVAL DIVISION.

State Armory, Wood and South streets, Rochester; Boathouse, Charlotte.

The second separate naval division was organized, November 24, 1891, and performed duty for the United States during the Spanish-American war in the United States navy, and in the United States auxiliary naval force aboard the "Franklin " and other vessels.
