226th Birthday of President Van Buren Remembered

KINDERHOOK, N.Y. - Brigadier General F. David Sheppard (at left), Deputy Commander of the New York Army National Guard and New York Air Guard Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Todd Luce place a wreath beside other wreaths on Dec. 5 honoring the 226th birthday of former U.S. President Martin Van Buren, a native of Kinderhook.
The birthday remembrance was also attended by U.S. Mint Deputy Director Andy Brunhart who introduced the first issuance of the Van Buren $1 presidential coin that was given to local school children who also attended the event.
Van Buren is buried in the Kinderhook Reformed Cemetery, along with his wife Hannah, his parents, and his son Martin Jr.
