New York National Guard Honors 21st President

ALBANY, NY (Oct. 5, 2012)-- Brig. Gen. Anthony P. German, Chief of Staff of the New York Air National Guard, and Command Sgt. Major Frank Wicks, New York National Guard Command Sergeant Major, commemorate the 183rd anniversary of the birth of President Chester A. Arthur, 21st President of the United States, during a ceremony held at the Albany Rural Cemetery October 5, 2012. President Arthur, a former school teacher, lawyer, Republican politician and member of the New York National Guard, became president on Sept. 19, 1881 when President James Garfield died from a bullet wound suffered at the hands of an assassin on July 2, 1881.
