Amherst Resident To Command Buffalo National Guard Unit
BUFFALO, NY (04/30/2009; 0850)(readMedia)-- New York Army National Guard Lt. Col. Robert Williams has been selected to command the 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry which returned from a deployment to Afghanistan in December.
He was selected for the job by a Command Selection Board of New York Army National Guard general officers and will take command in the fall.
Williams is currently the plans officer for the Syracuse-based 27th Infantry Brigade Combat . Williams, who joined the New York Army National Guard in 1986, deployed to Afghanistan as a member of the brigade headquarters last year. In civilian life he is an attorney with M&T Bank.
The 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry is what is known as a RSTA, for Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition, unit, with the job of collecting intelligence for the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
The squadron deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 with the job of providing security for units training the Afghan National Army and Police.
The squadron headquarters is located at the Masten Avenue Armory in Buffalo, and there are troops of the 2nd 101st based in Geneva and Jamestown as well as in Buffalo
