New York Congressional Delegation visits with Air National Guard's 174th Attack Wing

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (03/09/2015)(readMedia)-- Congressional representatives visiting with the New York Air National Guard's 174th Attack Wing will offer an opportunity to speak with news media representatives on March 10. Congressional representatives John Katko, Elise Stefanik and Richard Hanna are visiting the 174th Attack Wing and its commander, Colonel Greg Semmel, to learn more about the organization's mission and capabilities.

Congressman Katko represents the 24th District, including Syracuse and Auburn. Congresswoman Stefanik represents New York's 21st District in the North Country, including Fort Drum. The two are new to Congress this year. Congressman Hanna, representing New York's 22nd District which includes areas east of Syracuse, including Oneida, Rome, Utica and south to Cortland and Binghamton, took office in 2011.

WHAT: Media availability following a unit visit of the 174th Attack Wing

WHO: Congressional representatives John Katko, Elise Stefanik and Richard Hanna and New York Air National Guard Colonel Greg Semmel, commander of the 174th Attack Wing.

WHEN: Tuesday, March 10th at 11 a.m. Members of the Media MUST call the Public Affairs office no later than 9:30 a.m. to attend the press conference and MUST be at the Thompson Road gate of Hancock Field Air National Guard Base NO LATER THAN 10:45 a.m.

WHERE: Field Training Detachment facility, Hancock Field Air National Guard Base, 6001 Molloy Road, Syracuse, NY 13211. Entry through Thompson Road gate.

BACKGROUND:

The 174th Attack Wing is the only attack wing in the total Air Force. The wing trains all MQ-9 maintenance technicians for the Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve as well as training some personnel from allied nations. The wing also conducts training for MQ-9 pilots and sensor operators at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base and Fort Drum, operating out of Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield.

At the same time the wing deploys members oversees to support MQ-9 operations and other Air Force commitments and operates MQ-9s in the Central Command area of operations from a facility at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base.

The wing also maintains the air-to-ground gunnery range at Fort Drum which is used by Air Force, Air Guard and Air Force Reserve units across the northeast and provides forces to respond to state emergencies at the direction of the governor.
