150 New York Army National Guard Engineers Return from Duty in Iraq/Kuwait

NEW WINDSOR, NY (08/31/2017) (readMedia)-- 150 New York Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 1156th Engineer Company will be re-deploying back to New York after a nine month deployment in Kuwait and Iraq, this afternoon Aug. 31, at Stewart Airport.

Background:

During their deployment in Iraq the Soldiers supported the Iraqi Army and the United States forces. They also tested combat bridging techniques and built and updated buildings and other facilities at combat operation outposts and air bases.

The Soldiers arrived back in the United States at Fort Bliss, Texas on Aug. 21, 2017 where they completed out processing from active duty.

The 1156th Engineer Company is based at Camp Smith Training Site and Kingston and is part of the New York Army National Guard's 204th Engineer Battalion which is headquartered in Binghamton and also has elements in Walton, Horseheads and Buffalo.

During Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011 120 Soldiers from the 1156th Engineers assisted the New York State response in communities near Windham, N.Y.

In 2012, the company served as the urban search and extraction element as part of the New York National Guard's Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear (CBRN) Enhanced Response Force Package.

In addition to the unit's training to rescue CBRN victims, the company also conducted demolition in downtown Kingston in the fall of 2011 to prepare a training site for a disaster response exercise.

In 2014 the company deployed 85 Soldiers to Germany. The engineers worked on buildings and training sites at NATO's Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Bavaria.
