CAMP SMITH-- New York Guard Major Douglas Hedwig (left) poses with Maryland Defense Force Major Jari Villanueva who visited New York Guard headquarters here on Saturday, May 5 to honor Hedwig who is retiring from the states volunteer defense force. Hedwig has served as the commander of the New York Guard Band, joining after the 9/11 attacks, and provided advice to Villanueva on organizing a Maryland state guard band. Villanueva provided the New Yorker with Maryland Defense Force patches as a token of esteemUnder Hedwigs leadership the New York Guard band has performed in parades and at public events, as well as for veterans. Joint Task Force Soldiers, Airmen On Army TV

FORT HAMILTON-- At an early morning formation on Thursday, May 17, members of Joint Task Empire Shield Bravo Company look on as Joint Task Force Empire Shield Commander LTC Peter Riley and Joint Forces HQ State Chaplain CH (COL) Eric Olsen coined 2LT Zadell-Scafe -369th HHC , SFC Esquilin -369th HHC (both from Bravo Company JTF-ES) and SSGT Quiroga 106 RQW Air National Guard (Charlie Company JTF-ES) for their excellence, and being selected to be interviewed to by the Center of Army Profession and Ethicss (CAPE). The film crew from CAPE filmed the coining presentation, Service members on post, and interviewed the services about their experience in receiving APET (Army Profession and Ethics training) while on Joint task Force Empire Shield. The three service members coined were selected from among 58 who were APET certified on the Task Force

New York Guard Trains at Oriskany

New York State Preparedness Training Center -- Oriskany, NY -- New York Army National Guard Pfc. Alexander Ladighin of the 222 Chemical Company and New York Guard Pvt. Jose Castro, of the 88th Brigade, work together to build a decontamination tent during Homeland Response Force training here, May 16. Both decontamination teams train side-by-side to ensure the quickest and most accurate support to civil authorities in the State of New York. In the event of a chemical attack, both teams would be called to active duty by an executive order of the New York State Governor.

New Yorkers Compete in Best Warrior Contest

CAMP SMITH, NY-- New York Army National Guard Specialist Brian Lekhmus, from Salt Point, NY; and Sgt. David Martinson, from Albany, take a break on May 16 while competing in the Northeast Army National Guard Best Warrior Competition being held at Camp Smith Training Site May 15-17. The competition pits top non-commissioned officers and junior enlisted Soldiers from New England, New York and New Jersey against each other to determine who will represent the region in a national competition. The Soldiers were tested on military knowledge, physical fitness, marksmanship, land navigation, and Soldier tasks.

NEW YORK STATE PREPAREDNESS TRAINING CENTER, ORISKANY, N.Y. - New York Guard Staff Sgt. Francisco Hernandez of the 88th Brigade unravels water hoses used in the FEMA Region II Homeland Response Force decontamination line here May 16. About 50 state guard members train alongside their New York Army National Guard counterparts from the 222nd Chemical Company as part of the decontamination element of the Homeland Response Force. The HRF responds to Chemical, Biological, Radiological or Nuclear incidents in support of civil authorities for FEMA Region II, including New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
