ORCHARD PARK -- New York Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Nathan Wojtkowiak, Tech Sgt. Kevin Pawlukovich and Staff Sgt. NY Guardsman is Airman of year for U.S. Air Guard

CHANTILLY, VIRGINIA-- New York Air National Guard Senior Airman Dhruva Poluru, who is assigned to the 107th Attack Wing's 222nd Command and Control Squadron, has been chosen as Airman of the Year for the entire Air National Guard. Poluru, is a full-time Guard Airmen working with the National Reconnaissance office in Herndon, Virginia where he tracks satellites, among other duties. The National Reconnaissance Office is the agency which runs America's space surveillance systems.

New Yorkers Mark ANZAC Day

Guard Troops Prepare for Winter Storm Response

NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION, N.Y. - New York Air National Guard Technical Sgt. Richard Ball of Tonawanda, N.Y. and a member of the 107th Airlift Wing, packs his cold weather gear Jan. 7 in preparation for missions as part of the New York National Guard initial response force for Operation Polar Vortex. With heavy lake effect snows and wind chill warnings forecasting three feet of snow and temperatures at or below zero, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo mobilized 300 members of the New York National Guard to prepare to assist civil authorities during the storm’s passage this week. Members of the New York National Guard’s 107th Airlift Wing in Niagara Falls, 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry and 105th Military Police Company in Buffalo and the 174th Attack Wing in Syracuse will all provide Soldiers and Airmen along with vehicles to support local authorities as needed.

Air Guard Lights Up the Lake

NIAGRA FALLS--A C-130 flown by members of the New York Air National Guard’s 107th Airlift Wing lights up the sky over Lake Ontario as it drops flares during training on Sept. 25. The flares are designed to decoy a heat-seeking missile away from the aircraft. Approaching the restricted airspace over the lake reserved for military use, the navigator readied the defensive systems, the Loadmasters pulled the safety pins, and the pilots positioned the aircraft in the proper formation position. Once in the area, the aircrew dispensed their flares in reaction to simulated threats, lighting up the skies over Lake Ontario.

107th Security Forces Leave for Training

NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION--Thirteen members of the New York Air National Guard’s 107th Airlift Wing departed Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station on Saturday, February 25 for a three week intensive training event at Fort Bliss, Texas. At Fort Bliss they will hone their combat skills prior to forward deploying overseas to Afghanistan. Family members, friends and fellow airmen gathered to bid them farewell as they boarded an aircraft to depart for their six month tour of duty.

New York Air Guard Aids Troops in Afghanistan

AFGHANISTAN--A C-130 Hercules from the New York Air National Guard’s 107th Airlift Wing flies over mountainous Afghan terrain on its way to deliver much-needed supplies to a forward operating base in Oruzgan province, Afghanistan, June 22. The New York ANG C-130 flew the airdrop mission in conjunction with another C-130 from the Alaska ANG. Airdrops help mitigate the danger of transporting supplies via convoy.

Hockey Raises Money for Military Families

The base also houses an Armed Forces Reserve Center where Headquarters Troop of the New York Army National Guard’s 101st Cavalry is located.

Air Guard Remembers President Millard Fillmore

BUFFALO--Col Jim McCready, the vice commander, and incoming commander, of the New York Air National Guard’s 107th Airlift Wing places a wreath honoring President Millard Fillmore at his grave in Forest Lawn Cemetery on the 211th anniversary of the president’s birth in 1800 during a ceremony held by the University of Buffalo. Filmore served as the 13th President from 1850 to 1853. During his administration California was admitted to the Union and he dispatched Commodore Matthew Perry and a fleet of ships to Japan to open that nation to American trade.The United States military places wreaths from the current president at the gravesites of our nation’s past presidents on the anniversary of their births. The New York National Guard is responsible for placing the wreaths at the graves of Fillmore, Martin Van Buren in Kinderhook, Columbia County, and Chester Arthur in Menands, Albany County.

Air Guard Water Survival Training

NIAGARA FALLS--Members of the New York Air National Guard’s 136th Airlift Squadron float in the waters of Lake Ontario during a biannual training exercise that teaches aircrew water survival skills in the event of an in-water- emergency. Aircrew members practiced deploying signal devices, such as smoke flares, beacons and flare guns and then took a short ride compliments of the United States Coast Guard, Station Niagara, to deploy their life vests and swim to the awaiting life raft where they mastered entry techniques and deployment of the protective canopy.

NewYork Air Guard General Pins On Second Star

Guardsman/State Trooper Recognized

LATHAM-- New York State Trooper Edward Stefik, who is also Master Sgt. Stefik of the 107th Security Forces Squardon of the New York Air National Guard, recieves the Master Sgt. Joseph Longobardo Trophy for best novice marksman at the annual Adjutant General’s Match from Brig. Gen. Patrik Murphy, the Adjutant General, during a short ceremony at State Headquarters on Wednesday, June 30. Stefik, a 13-year member of the New York State Police and a rifleman on the State Police Special Operations Response Team, has been a member of the 107th Airlift Wing, based at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, for the past two years. Prior to that he served with the 98th Division of the United States Army Reserve and spent a year in Iraq, where he was awarded the Combat Action Badge. The Longobardo Trophy, the New York National Guard’s top award for shooters participating in the annual competition for the first time, is named after New York State Trooper Joseph Longobardo, who was also a member of the New York Air National Guard and who was killed in the line of duty on August 31, 2006.

Western New York Bosses See Air Force Up Close

MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Fla -- Western New York Tim Horton’s owner Robert Burns (on left) and his son Jared Burns inspect the cockpit of an Air Force KC-135. The two employers along with more than 35 other local employers had the opportunity to tour the KC-135 on a recent ESGR funded trip to the 927th Air Refueling Wing at MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Fla. as part of a combined New York Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Bosslift for the Employer Suppport of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) program by the 107th Airlift Wing and the 914th Airlift Wing at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Base. On March 25 more than 35 Niagara and Erie county bosses boarded one of Team Niagara's C-130 bound for MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Fla. The trip was designed to educate the employers the vital role that Guardsmen and Reservists play in today's military. Team Niagara consists of the New York Air National Guard's 107th Airlift Wing and the Air Force Reserve's 914th Airlift Wing. As a result of the Base Realignment and Closure Committee the two collocated wings are now associated, working together flying and maintaining the same air frames.

Air Guard Supports Army Guard Training

The Army Guard members were heading for a long-weekend drill at Fort Picket, Virginia. The 107the transported 350 members of the New York Army National Guard to Picket for training there.

Bottled Water Bound for Haiti

MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.--Senior Master Sgt. Thomas Obrochta 107th Airlift Wing C-130 load master, ensures that a pallet of water bottles destined for delivery to Haiti are secure during a relief mission executed on Monday, Feb. 8. The New York Air National Guard crew delivered 18,270 water bottles to Haiti during this mission. "Everything needs to be secured for flight." said Obrochta. "If it is not bolted down, it gets strapped down" he added. The 107th has provided crews along with aircraft for the transportation of supplies into and evacuees out of Haiti since four days after the earthquake hit.

Honoring a President from Buffalo

BUFFALO--New York Air National Guard Col. Timothy Vaughan, Commander of the 107th Mission Support Group of the 107th Airlift Wing,(left) joins University of Buffalo Executive Vice President James A. Willis in honoring President Millard Fimore on Thursday, Jan. 7, the 210th anniversary of his birth. Col. Vaughan laid a wreath from the White House on Fillmore's grave marker at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The New York National Guard and other military services assist the White House in laying wreaths to commemorate New York presidents. In the Albany area the Guard lays wreaths at the graves of Presidents Chester Arthur and Martin Van Buren. Fillmore, who died in 1874, was president from 1850 to 1853 and was the last member of the Wig Party to serve as president. He was founder of the University of Buffalo.

107th Security Forces Return Home From Deployment

NIAGARA FALLS-- New York Air National Guard Master Sgt. Robert Farina embraces his children on August 16 after being apart for more than six months while providing security at Sather Air Base in Iraq. Farina a member of the 107th Airlift Wing Security Forces Squadron was among the first wave of deployed SFS members to return home Sunday. Earlier in the year Farina and other SFS members were called upon to ensure the security of Sather Air Base, Baghdad, Iraq. "I'm, proud to serve my country but it's great to back home with my family," Farina said.

New York Air Guard Unit Farewells Veteran Plane

A KC-135R Stratotanker leaves her home with the New York Air National Guard?s 107th Air Refueling Wing in Niagara Falls for a new home with the 126th Air Refueling Wingof the Illinois Air National Guard,on Jan. 23. The aircraft served with the 107th ARW for 14 years. The departure begins a series of farewells the Guardsmen of the 107th will give to their aircraft as they convert to an airlift wing. Members of the unit have already begun retraining on C-130 aircraft. Under the reorganization plan the 197th will jointly operate 12 C-130 aircraft in conjunction with the Air Force Reserve?s 914th Airlift Wing. Both units share the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.

Air Guard Members Head For Combat Zone

Master Sgt. Mahoney will be part of an Expeditionary Combat Support package for a Civil Engineering Squadron. More than 100 members of the 107 Refueling Wing, based at Niagara Air Force Reserve Station, will be deploying in support of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan over the next few months.
