Commander, New York Naval Militia Southern Command
Commander John P. Curran is a New York native. He graduated from American Military University with a Master's in Security Management in 2008. He also holds a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
CDR Curran was commissioned through the Limited Duty Officer Program as a Security Officer in August 2007 and completed Direct Officer Commission School in Newport, Rhode Island, in January 2008.
CDR Curran enlisted in the US Navy in November 1998 through the Navy Reserve's Advanced Pay Grade Program as a Master at Arms Second Class. He was assigned to the Master at Arms Unit at Navy Marine Corps Reserve Activity, Bronx, NY.
In 2001, LCDR Curran was assigned to Navy Ordnance Reporting Handling Battalion 1, Charlie/Delta Companies at Navy Reserve Center, Earle, NJ, where he served as the companies' Master-at-Arms.
First mobilized in 2003 after 9/11 for OPERATION NOBLE EAGLE to Washington Navy Yard and BUMED, Washington, DC, for a 2-year assignment. He was assigned as a Firearms and Tactics Instructor, Patrol Supervisor, and BUMED Installation AT/FP Coordinator. In 2013, he was deployed again as an Individual Augmentee for OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM to Afghanistan with CJIATF-435, as a Detainee Operations Liaison Officer, Parwan National Detention Facility, Bagram Airfield.
His final mobilization in 2022 was to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, to serve as Chief Force Protection/Security for CJTF - OPERATION INHERENT RESOLVE.
After his commissioning in 2007, he served as OPS/ADMIN of NR NSF NWS Earle, AOIC of NR NCIS HQ, OIC of NR NCIS MIDLANT, XO of NR NSF NWS Earle, CO of NR NSF NSA Philadelphia (twice) CO of NR NSF NSB New London (twice).
He participated in War Games at US Naval War College, completed Senior Officer Leadership Course, Department Head Leadership Course, Navy Individual Augmentee Combat Readiness Course, and 40 Hour Military Investigator Course (US Amy-MP).
In his civilian capacity, CDR Curran served with the New York City Police Department for twenty-one years and retired with the rank of Sergeant. He is currently the Director of Administrative Services at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY. He has been married to the former Victoria Abad for 33 years, and they have one son, Michael.
CDR Curran's military decorations include 1 Meritorious Service Medal, 1 Joint Service Commendation Medal, 4 Navy Commendation Medals, 1 Army Commendation Medal, and 2 Navy Achievement Medals in addition to other campaigns, unit, and service awards.
