National Guard Breaks Ground for $27 Million Readiness Center

The New York National Guard, and local officials mark the start of construction of a state-of-the-art training and maintenance facility at New York’s Camp Smith Training Site in the Cortlandt Manor near Peekskilll.

Officially marks construction of a $27 million state-of-the-art training and maintenance facility at Camp Smith, the National Guard Training Site near Peekskill, N.Y.

Camp Smith Training Site, Routes 6 and 202 in Cortlandt Manor, NY

Glenman Industrial and Commercial Contractor Corp., a Yonkers, N.Y. company, has been awarded the contract to build the $27,447,111 Army National Guard Readiness Center at Camp Smith in the Town of Cortlandt Manor near Peekskill. Glenman Industrial, located at One Odell Plaza in Yonkers, submitted a bid of $17,667,000 fot the construction contract. The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning contract for the building went to E.W. Tompkins Construction, 124 Sheridan Avenue, Albany, NY. The company bid $4,192,000 on the job. Ferguson Electric Company, of Plainville, Connecticut was awarded the electrical work contract with a bid of $3,785,700. Plumbing work on the facility will be handled by S&O Construction Services, 11 Charles St. Pleasant Valley, N.Y. The center was designed by QPK Designs, LLC, of Syracuse. The New York State Office of General Services awarded the contracts The cost of the project will be shared by New York State and federal government. The state will pay 25 percent of the costs with the federal government picking up the remaining expenses. Funding for the center is part of the 2007 Future Year Defense Plan. The 92,000-square foot building will provide administrative, training and supply space for 350 New York Army National Guard Soldiers. The three-storey building will include a kitchen, an assembly hall, several classrooms, space for a military band, offices, locker rooms, and supply and maintenance spaces. Camp Smith is a state-owned training facility which allows National Guard units to conduct weapons training and basic tactical exercises. The facility also includes modern classrooms and housing for soldiers. Camp Smith is also used by a number of federal agencies including the FBI and the United States Military Academy at West Point.
