Approximately 100 members of the New York Army National Guard return to their hometown armories and families on Wednesday following the successful completion of a six-month deployment in Arizona as part of Operation Jumpstart -- the federal National Guard mission supporting U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the US/Mexico border. The Citizen Soldiers, known as Team New York, provided support and assistance to the U.S. Border Enforcement Agency in the Nogales region of the Arizona/Mexican border. In the six month period of operations for Team NY, the Customs Agents in the region seized more than half of a million pounds of illegal drugs as arrests for illegal immigration in the region diminished during the National Guard presence. The Soldiers represent Army National Guard volunteers from across New York State, with nearly every armory providing Soldiers in support of the national homeland security mission. Working journalists should have photo ID to gain admittance to the armories on Wednesday. For additional information, contact the DMNA public affairs office at (518) 786-4581.
