BINGHAMTON, NY (08/20/2012)-- The New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force, in conjunction with the Broome County STOP DWI Program, will provide a drug prevention program and climbing wall for children in Binghamton, N.Y., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 25 and 26. The four-member Soldier and Airman team will be offering the drug prevention pitch and Rockwall Challenge climbing session to approximately 50 people as part of the Chris Tater Memorial Races. The races are dedicated in memory of Chris Tater, an avid cyclist, who was killed by a drunk driver. The race draws more than 1,500 particpants and more than 10,000 spectators. The events features a music festival, an expo area and demonstrations. The Rockwall Challenge is a unique constructive learning opportunity for youth 8 -17 years old. The kids will get a talk on setting goals and meeting life challenges and healthy choices are discussed. Students then use these concepts while climbing the wall. Army National Guard Sgt. Scott Kramer will present and be available for interviews. The New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force offers partnerships and support to community based organizations in the drug prevention effort. By offering the New York National Guard’s unique and specialized resources, the New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force provides their civilian counterparts with the tools they need to fight the spread of drugs in New York. The task force is composed of New York Army and Air National Guard members who provide specialized assistance to law enforcement. They also conduct drug prevention programs around the state.
