Oneonta Resident and National Guard Col. Carlton Cleveland, Named Chief-of-Staff of 53rd Troop Command
LATHAM, NY (01/15/2013)-- New York Army National Guard Colonel Carlton Cleveland, an Oneonta resident and combat veteran, has been named Chief-of-Staff of the New York Army National Guard's 53rd Troop Command.
Headquartered at Camp Smith, near Peekskill, the 53rd Troop Command is responsible for the training and administration of 4,000 New York Army National Guard combat support and combat service support Soldiers across New York. These include military police units, transportation companies, an engineer battalion, and a sustainment brigade
Cleveland, a full-time officer in the New York Army National Guard, will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the command.
He will replace Col. Ronnie Ridner who is retiring.
Cleveland previously served as the operations officer for the 53rd Troop Command and recently returned from a deployment to Afghanistan where he served he was responsible for training Afghan Soldiers and police while serving with the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 82nd Airborne Division. He also served as liaison officer to the Polish 6th Airborne Brigade while in Afghanistan.
"I'm honored to have been selected for this assignment," Cleveland said.
"The 53d Troop Command has distinguished itself during disaster responses in New York State as well as numerous deployments around the World. It's a very professional and well respected organization with diverse skills and many capabilities. I'm looking forward to working with the Soldiers and Leaders as we strive to continue and improve upon this success," he added.
Cleveland's previous assignments include service as commander of the 204th Engineer Battalion-- which has elements in Binghamton, Horseheads and Walton-executive officer and operations officer of the 1st Battalion 105th Infantry, and commander of an engineer company and engineer service company.
He holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Marist College and a Masters Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, as well as a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from SUNY Cortland.
His military education includes the Army War College, the Command and General Staff College, Combined Arms Service Staff School, Infantry Officers Advanced Course and Engineer Officers Basic Course.
His awards include the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star, Afghan Campaign Medal, Meritorious Service Medal ( 3 awards), NATO Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Parachutist Badge, New York State Humanitarian Service Medal, and New York State Defense of Liberty Medal with World Trade Center Device.
He and his wife Michelle have two daughters, Catherine and Megan. He's a native of Mount Vision and graduated from Laurens Central School.
