New York National Guard Holds Hearing on Proposed Stormville Maintenance Facility on Monday, June 10

EAST FISHKILL, NY (06/05/2013)-- EAST FISHKILL-Representatives of the the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs and the New York Army National Guard will meet with members of the public at the town hall here on Monday June 10 to answer questions about a $23.9 million maintenance facility the Guard proposes to build on 46 acres in Stormville, Town of Beekman, adjacent to Green Haven Correctional Facility.

The planned 75,000- square foot Combined Support Maintenance Shop would employ 50 New York Army National Guard technicians who will be responsible for repairing vehicles, electronic equipment, and weapons for Guard units in the Hudson Valley, New York City, and Long Island.

The facility is designed to provide maintenance support for about 1,200 wheeled vehicles assigned to Army National Guard units across South-Eastern New York. These vehicles are used for training and to support the Guard's emergency response mission. No more than 40-50 vehicles would be at the planned maintenance site at any one time.

Plans call for eight vehicle maintenance bays, tool and supply rooms, an arms vault, equipment calibration workshops, a paint booth and a canvas repair shop.

The planned maintenance shop would replace an aging facility-with buildings constructed between 1949 and 1951--located at the Camp Smith Training Site near Peekskill. The New York Army National Guard maintains similar facilities at Fort Drum, Rochester and on Staten Island.

Currently equipment and vehicles which cannot be maintained at the Camp Smith Facility, because of the age or unsuitability of the equipment there, must be shipped to Fort Drum, 200 miles away.

The facility will be paid for by the federal government.

The property is part of an 86-acre parcel which was once a prison farm operated by Green Haven Correctional Facility inmates. The location also offers easy access to major highway systems.

The public information session will begin at 7 p.m. and run through 9 p.m. at the town hall.

Town residents can visit various stations and ask questions and/or complete comment cards. The stations, manned by representatives of the Division of Military and Naval Affairs and the Army National Guard will address traffic issues, site ecology, project design, local airport/FAA issues, and typical day to day operations of the CSMS facility.

The documents are also available on the Division of Military and Naval Affairs website.
