GARDEN CITY-Retired Brig. Gen. Pat Alesia, president of the 42nd Infantry (Rainbow) Division Association, and Col. (Ret.) Bill Vorlicek, Downstate Chapter Chairman, present a memorial wreath during a ceremony at the Rainbow Division Memorial near the former gate of Camp Mills in Garden City, N.Y., May 23, 2026. Each year a wreath is presented at the memorial to the 42nd Infantry Division.The 15by5foot Alabama limestone obelisk, dedicated in 1941, marks the camp where the division assembled before deploying to France in 1917. The 42nd Infantry Division the Rainbow Division suffered 2,810 killed in World War I, 553 in World War II, and 24 in Iraq and Afghanistan.
