This exhibition (New York State Capitol, October 2009 - May 2010) showcases the New York State Excelsior Brigade and the Civil War battle flags carried by the brigade’s founding regiments. Each flag honors the 8,000 volunteers who served in the brigade organized by the controversial New York City politician, Daniel Sickles, and named for the state’s motto. Excelsior’s Standards memorializes the men who bore the brigade’s flags and presents these tangible emblems that bound its citizen soldiers together.
