LATHAM-- New York Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 53rd Troop Command salute during change of command ceremonies held at New York National Guard headquarters in Latham on Dec. 3,2023. Brig. Gen. Jack James, took command of the unit from Brig. Gen. Joseph Biehler during the ceremony. This is the second time James has commanded the 53rd. The decoration is traditionally awarded to German enlisted soldiers for weapons proficiency and is one of the few foreign awards approved for wear by U.S. military personnel.
