The research center currently is searching for volunteers to help with vitally important projects. As a volunteer, you are not only helping with crucial projects, but you can do so at your convenience: you can either work here at the museum or from your home. We have two different types of duties available from research to data entry. This way, you can live anywhere in the country and still help contribute to historical projects. The projects we are working on currently are: 1 - We have approximately 15,000 service cards for men and women who served in the New York Air National Guard between 1945 and the 1980s. These cards contain residence and unit information. We are trying to index these cards so that the information they contain can be put on our web site. 2 - Indexing the New York National Guardsman. The New York National Guardsman was a magazine published monthly from April, 1924 to August, 1940 when much of the New York National Guard was federalized for duty. It is a good source of photographs and biographical information on higher-ranking officers. 3 - Transcribing manuscripts. This consists of transcribing letters, diaries and other sources into a word processing program. 4 - Oral History transcription. The museum has nearly 2,000 oral histories. We are in the process of transcribing these so that they can be searched. The workflow for this project is that we mail you a video on DVD and you transcribe the spoken words into a word processing document (for example, Microsoft Word) and email us the final product.
The museum is also looking for docents to staff the information desk on the museum floor.
If you are interested please send an email to int-historians@ng.army.mil Any support you can give is greatly needed and appreciated!
