Long-time leader retires after almost 42 years

LATHAM- New York Army National Guard Command Sgt. Major David Piwowarski receives the Legion of Merit from Major General Ray Shields, the adjutant general of New York, during retirement ceremonies held on Friday, July 7, 2023 at New York National Guard headquarters in Latham, as Piwowarski concluded a military career which began in 1981. He was replaced as the senior enlisted leader for the New York Army Guard by Command Sgt. Major Edwin Garris.

NY Guard HQ marks 386th Guard birthday

LATHAM-- New York Army National Guard Master Sgt. Jerry Swain and Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Emma Davignon cut the ceremonial National Guard birthday cake during a celebration of the Guards 386th birthday at New York National Guard headquarters Latham New York Dec. 13 2022. Swain, age 60, and Davignon, age 18, participated in the tradition of the oldest and youngest service members coming together to cut the cake to symbolize the past and future of the National Guard.

Civil Support Team loads at Stratton ANGB

STRATTON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE N.Y--An ATV is loaded onto a CH-47 Chinook from the New York Army National Guards Bravo Co.3rd Battalion 126th Aviation in Rochester, New York on March 18 2019. The ATV accompanied by a five person "strike team" that is part of the 2nd Civil Support Team here. The strike team concept allows for rapid deployment capabilities. The element was being flown to Hamilton College in Oneida County to take part in a four-day long drill.

Nov. 28 2018. The 2nd CST based in Scotia N.Y. is trained to identify and respond to chemical biological and radiological agents and advise first-responders on how to deal with those threats.

Groundbreaking for new facility at Camp Smith

New York Veterans Interviews Now on YouTube

SARATOGA SPRINGS--Video interviews with more than 600 New York Veterans of World War I World War II Korea Vietnam Iraq Afghanistan and the Cold War can now be viewed online by going to the New York State Military Museum YouTube Channel. The museum which is run by the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs has been collecting video interviews since 2000.

Martin Van Buren Honored

KINDERHOOK NY--New York Army National Guard Brig.General Raymond Shields speaks about President Martin Van Buren during a ceremony honoring him on Dec. 5 2013 at the Dutch Reformed Cemetery here. The ceremony marked the 231st Birthday of Van Buren. Shields presented a wreath from President Barak Obama at the grave of the eighth president. Local officials representing the Village of Kinderhook the National Park Service and local groups also presented wreaths honoring Van Buren.

SARATOGA SPRINGS-- Major General Patrick Murphy, the Adjutant General of New York joins Lance Ingmar, President of the Friends of the New York State Military Museum and Courtney Burns, the curator and acting manager of the Military Museum in officially opening the "Empire for Union" exhibit which commemorates the Civil War. The exhibit highlights the unique Civil War items New York has been collecting since 1863.

New York Guardsman Competes in Biathalon

JERICHO,VT--Lt. Col. Brian O'Keefe, New York Army National Guard, representing the New York National Guard for the first time in competition, during the Sprint portion of the 2013 National Guard Eastern Regional Biathlon held at the Ethan Allen Training Site, Jericho Vt., Feb. 9, 2013. The New York National Guard has a long history of creating Olympic Biathletes including Maj. (Ret.) Curtis Schreiner, a three time Olympian. According to the National Guards Biathlon headquarters, located at the Ethan Allen Training Site in Jericho, Vt., members of the National Guard All-Guard Biathlon Team were represented on the 1988, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, and 2010 U.S. Winter Olympic Biathlon Team and is the only Department of Defense (DOD) organization that consistently sends Soldiers to the Olympics.

Fallen Guard Soldiers Remembered in Ceremony

FARMINGDALE--Retired Command Sgt. Eighty employers took part in the event which was visited by 175 Soldiers and Veterans.
