The New York Army National Guard's 206th Military Police Company has served in Iraq and responded to Hurricane Sandy and recent Mohawk Valley flooding. Traditionally the ceremony allows the Soldiers to see who they will follow on the battlefield as the symbol of their unit goes from the old commander to the new one.

The Soldiers are among more than 1,100 Army and Air National Guard Soldiers and Airmen deployed at the order of New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to respond to the storm.

NEW YORK CITY -- A convoy of the New York Army National Guard’s 206th Military Police Company heads to Long Island to conduct disaster recovery operations in the wake of Hurricane Irene on Aug. 28. The Latham-based unit is just part of the nearly 2,000 Soldiers and airmen New York Governor Andrew Cuomo mobilized in response to the expected landfall of the hurricane Irene, which caused deaths and destruction in other states. Soldiers and Airmen deployed to Long Island, New York City, and the Hudson Valley to assist with traffic control on bridges and tunnels, sandbagging operations at the World Trade Center site, evacuation shelter operations in New York City, the construction of barriers for railway yards and train tunnels, and other hurricane emergency efforts. Soldiers and other New York military forces who were staged at the Lexington Avenue Armory on Aug. 27 have been posted at New York City shelters to assist the American Red Cross and emergency personnel with potential storm victims.

LATHAM--Members of the New York Army National Guard’s 206th Military Police Company wade into a crowd of well-wishers as they return to home station at New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs headquarters on Friday, June 18. More than 70 members of the unit from New York’s Capital Region returned to company headquarters here. More than 160 National Guard Soldiers deployed to Iraq with the company and similar receptions occured a Camp Smith near Peekskill, Utica, Rochester, Buffalo and Auburn on Friday.

BASRA, Iraq-- Brig. Gen. Pat Murphy, the Adjutant General of New York, shakes the hand of 206th Military Police Company member Spec. Tracy Bryant during a visit to the Basra Logistics Support Area on April 7. Murphy, the commander of the New York National Guard was visiting the 206th and other New York Army National Guard units in Iraq and Kuwait along with Command Sgt. Major Robert Van Pelt, the New York State Sgt. Major has part of the Joint Monthly Access for Reserve Components program which allows both Army Reserve and National Guard leaders to go see their troops deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan.

BASRA, Iraq--New York Army National Guard Soldiers of the 206th MP Company, posted in Basra, examine a map during a recent training exercise on quick reaction force missions. As American military forces in Iraq draw-down, Soldiers are learning to do new missions. The company's 3rd Squad, 2nd Platoon recently cross-trained on the QRF mission with 3rd Squad, 2rd Platoon, led by Staff Sgt. Anthony Boodoo. The day's training also included escorting a British convoy.

The 185 members of the unit will train at Fort Dix for approximately two months before deploying to Iraq. The Empire State Plaza is a state government complex in downtown Albany.
