Commander, New York Naval Militia Northern Command
Captain Timothy Zakriski was born and raised in upstate New York. He attended Union College where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. A registered professional engineer in New York, he has worked for several heavy/highway contractors as a construction manager and project engineer. He recently retired after 30 years of service with the New York State Department of Public Service.
A former enlisted Marine, Captain Zakriski was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy Civil Engineer Corps in 1982. He served in a variety of positions in the Reserve Naval Construction Force and Naval Facilities Engineering Command. While serving with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 12, Davisville, R.I., he held the positions of Engineering Officer, Assistant Training Officer, Company Commander and Air Detachment OIC. He served with Civil Engineer Corps School, Port Hueneme, California as Course Director for Junior Officer Training and Seabee Military Instruction. He held the position of Alpha Company Commander, NMCB-13 before being assigned as Assistant CONUS Operations Officer at Second Naval Construction Brigade, Little Creek, Va.
In 1994 Captain Zakriski was placed on active duty and served as the Engineering Coordinator for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Bosnia. While so assigned, he was the sole U.S. Navy officer within Bosnia and served as the liaison to the UN Protection Force. Upon his return he was assigned to NMCB-21 where he served as Operations Officer, Executive Officer, and for an interim period Commanding Officer. Subsequently he was assigned to Engineering Field Division Atlantic where he served as Department Head and Executive Officer.
Captain Zakriski assumed command of NMCB-21, Lakehurst, N.J. in October 2001. In February 2003, under Captain Zakriski’s direction, NMCB-21 mobilized two heavy air detachments and numerous other personnel in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Subsequent to his command assignment, he reported to Officer in Charge of Construction, Navy Yard Washington, where he was mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom and served as Base Development Officer, Umm Qasr Iraq in 2007-2008. Upon release from active duty Captain Zakriski served in his final Navy assignment as Staff Engineer for NATO.
Seabee Combat Warfare qualified, Captain Zakriski’s personal awards include the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, two awards of the Navy Commendation Medal, three awards of the Navy Achievement Medal, along with other unit and campaign awards.
Captain Zakriski has been a member of the New York Naval Militia since January 1978. He serves as Commander, NYNM Northern Command. He previously served as Deputy Commander, Northern Command.
Captain Zakriski resides in Glenville New York with his wife Kathleen. They have two sons.
