National Guard Civil Support Teams are trained to detect chemical biological radiological nuclear and high explosive materials and report on potential threats to civil authorities. The 324th Civil Support Team based at Fort Hamilton is one of two in the New York National Guard and focuses on the New York City metropolitan area.

BOSTON-- New York Army National Guard Sgt. Saul Rodriguez, a member of the Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn-based 24th Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team, poses with Gen.Frank Grass, Chief of the National Guard Bureau and Major General L. Scott Rice, the Adjutant General of Massachusetts following a coin presentation ceremony in the Massachusetts State House on June 3. Rodriguez was one of five 24th CST members who were augmenting the Massachusetts National Guard's security operation during the Boston Marathon on April 15 when a bomb went off at the finish line. Rodriguez was one of 14 Soldiers presented Army Commendation Medals by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick in a symbolic gesture of thanks to the 1,300 Guard Soldiers and Airmen who participated in the response and the manhunt that followed.

FORT HAMILTON, Brooklyn - The 24th Civil Support Team conducts training by identifying agents and substances, assessing current and projected consequences here. The 24th CST is based at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. Their mission is to support civil authorities at a domestic Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Enhanced high-yield explosives (CBRNE) incident site with identification and assessment of hazards, advice to civil authorities and facilitating the arrival of follow-on military forces during emergencies and incidents of weapons of mass destruction terrorism, intentional and unintentional release of CBRNE materials and natural or man-made disasters in the United States the result in, or could result in, catastrophic loss of life or property.
