JERICHO, VERMONT -- New York Army National Guard Sgt. Peter Fillion representing finishes the final ruck of the National Guard's National Best Warrior Competition on August 8 2024 at Camp Ethan Allen near Jericho Vermont, prior to being declared the winner in the junior enlisted category. The Best Warrior Competition is a physically and mentally challenging five-day event that tests Soldiers on a variety of tactical and technical skills. Fillion, an Amherst resident and a member of the 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry, will now compete for top honors Army-wide and represent the Army National Guard in the Army's Best Squad competition.

YOUNGSTOWN TRAINNG AREA--A New York Army National Guard Soldier from the 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry Regiment headquartered at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station but with elements across western New York, takes aim at the enemy during a spur ride at the Youngstown Lewiston Training Area Youngstown New York Aug. 17 2023. The Soldiers had to complete a written exam on tactical knowledge followed by route area and zone recon training lanes and finally a 12-mile ruck march over the course of 48 hours as part of a tradition of cavalrymen earning their spurs.

FORT POLK--A cavalry scout from the New York Army National Guard's 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry provides supporting fires against an opposing force element during training at Fort Polk, La. The reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition squadron deployed as part of the New York Army National Guard 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. The squadron participated in the July rotation at the Joint Readiness Training Center, a force on force training exercise that challenges Soldiers and units with realistic, combined arms training.

CHEEKTOWAGA-- Two New York Army National Guard Soldiers from the 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry man a traffic control point along the New York State Thruway in Cheektowaga on Friday, Jan. 9. After Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo ordered the Thruway closed due to road conditions on Thursday night, Jan.8, New York National Guard members on State Active Duty assisted the Thruway Authority and the New York State Police in closing the highway to traffic. The 107th Airlift Wing and 105th Military Police company also took part in the mission.

The unit, based in Niagara Falls, N.Y., is part of the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT), training here as part of the brigade&rsquot;s preparations for mobilization and deployment to Afghanistan in early 2012. The training provides brigade Soldiers with a realistic, demanding, simulated combat environment. About 1,500 of the Soldiers are currently scheduled to deploy.

CAMP EDWARDS, Mass-- Three New York Army National Guardsmen from A Troop 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry--Staff Sgt. Matthew Smith, Sgt. Mickael Cressman, and Sgt. Daniel Washburn-- take a break during the battalion's Spur Ride event here the weekend of August 7-8. Sixteen participants, including the Squadron Commander, LTC Dave Dunkle took part in challenge which included a ten-mile forces march, weapons qualification, weapons assembly and disassembly tests,land navigation, communications testing, and a Army Physical Fitness Test. 14 of the 16 participants earned their spurs.

1st Sgt Troy Steward, a member of 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry who spent most of 2006 as the NCOIC of a 16-man Embedded Training Team in Afghanistan, was recognized this month by the USO of Metropolitan New York for his service to the Army. Steward, pictured here on �the Stan� received the George Van Cleave Military Leadership Award during a banquet on Dec. 6. While serving in Iraq Steward, age 38, maintained a blog, www.bouhammer.com, which became one of the most-read military blogs on the Internet. Steward�s writings were included in Doonesbury Cartoonist Garry Trudeau�s book �The Sandbox� which highlighted the blogs of 40 service people serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. They�re both the same, Steward once told �The Washington Post� "There�s a big beach in both, and there�s no ocean over there.�
