New Army Guard one-star general

Retiring officer honored

LATHAM-- New York Army National Guard Maj. Gen. Thomas Spencer, commander of the 42nd Infantry Division, congratulates Col. Peter Mehling upon his presentation of the Legion of Merit during his September 22, 2023 retirement ceremony at the National Guard Headquarters in Latham, N.Y. Mehling served as the division chief of staff and retired after more than 26 years of military service.

Honors for a World War I unknown in France

OISE-AISNE AMERICAN CEMETERY, France --New York Army National Guard Command Sgt. Major Corey Cush, the senior enlisted leader for the 42nd Infantry Division, salutes the remains of a World War I Soldier which were interred at the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery on June 7, 2023. The Soldier was buried in a churchyard that is within the area the 42nd Infantry Division operated in during 1918. The Soldier was probably a member of the 165th Infantry Regiment, originally the New York National Guard's 69th Infantry.

Groundbreaking for new maintenance shop

TROY, New York --New York National Guard and New York State Office of General Services officials join together for a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony, marking the start of construction for a maintenance facility budgeted at $17 million held on March 32, 2023 at the New York State Armory on Glenmore Road in Troy, New York. Pictured are, from left, Major General Ray Shields, the adjutant general of New York, Jeanette Moy, commissioner of the New York State Office of General Services; Col. 42 ID Iraq War Veterans Gather in Kuwait

CAMP ARIFJAN--Sixteen Soldiers assigned to the 42nd Infantry Division headquarters who deployed with the division to Iraq in 2005 and are currently deployed to Camp Arifjan Kuwait gathered for a group photo on May 16 2020. The Soldiers are displaying a special flag the division commander commissioned in 2004 to commemorate the divisions role in the response to the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11 2001. In 2005 the division commanded 23000 Soldiers in four Iraqi provinces. Currently the division is providing mission command for Army elements in the Middle East .

KUWAIT-- Soldiers of the New York Army National Guard's 42nd Infantry Division, providing mission command of the Army's Task Force Spartan Shield in the Middle East, conduct a Mobile Command Post Exercise on April 27, 2020. 650 members of the 42nd Infantry Division headquarters deployed to the region earlier this year. The Commander of Task Force Spartan Shield, Major General Steven Ferrari, visited his Soldiers and Staff during their recent Mobile Command Post Exercise. The General's visit allowed for a showcase of the Mobile Command Post and the Soldiers that helped set it up.

42nd Division recognizes Gen. Douglas McArthur

New York Army National Guard Soldiers of the 42nd Infantry Division, (left) Maj. Michael Tillistrand the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion plans officer and Lt. Col. Gurpreet Singh, the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion Commander, lay a memorial wreath at the Gen. Douglas MacArthur memorial located at West Point, N.Y on November 8, 2019. MacArthur was the officer who suggested the formation of a multi-state division in 1917. He later went on to command the division. The wreath is one of several presented at the 42nd Infantry Divisions markers on, or around, Veterans Day to commemorate the history of the division which was organized over a hundred years ago. The wreaths are purchased by the Rainbow Division Veteran's Foundation and presented by New York Army National Guard Soldiers.

SERINGES et NESLES, FRANCE --A color guard from the New York Army National Guards 42nd Infantry Division takes part in a commemoration event commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Oise-Aisne Campaign in which the division took part at the Oise- Aisne American Cemetery in Seringes et Nesles France on July 28 2018. The Soldiers participated in a centennial commemoration of the Battle of Croix Rouge Farm at the Oise-Aisne Cemetery and wreath-laying at the Croix Rouge Farm Rainbow Division Memorial.

Northeast Army Representatives Gather

GLENVILLE, NY-- Representatives from the New York Army National Guard, the Army Reserve,and the 10th Mountain Division gather for a group photo at the Glenville Armed Forces Reserve Center on Sept. 23, following a meeting of the Northeast Regional Partnership. This Range is Hot

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - While the temperature reached a summer time high of 95 degrees, Soliders from Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, A, B and C Troops, 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry spent the week of June 18-22 at Fort Drum familiarizing with various weapon systems. It was the first time the unit was able to pull about 225 Soldiers from Niagara Falls, Geneva and Jamestown as well as some Soldiers from the Buffalo-based Company D, 427th Brigade Support Bn. for support during refocus/qualification training since standing down for an Afghanistan deployment with the 27th Infantry Bde. Combat Team last fall. The 101st also qualified on the new M2A1 .50 caliber machine gun, vehicle mounted .50 caliber, M4 rifles and sniper tactics.

National Guard Association Leader Talks to Troops

TROY, N.Y. -- Retired National Guard Maj. Gen. Gus L. Hargett, Jr. addresses members of the New York Army National Guard on behalf of the National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS) at the 42nd Infantry Division Headquarters in Troy, N.Y. March 6. Hargett, the former Adjutant General for the state of Tennesee, has been a lifelong member of NGAUS and now serves as president of the organization that lobbies on behalf of the Army and Air National Guard to ensure elected leaders provide for the members of the National Guard and the readiness of the force. “We are the oldest lobbying organization in our nation’s capital,” Hargett told the troops, “since 1878 working to make equipment, resources and benefits available to our National Guard.”

Rainbow Soldier Recognized in Japan

CAMP CHITOSE, JAPAN-- 42nd Division Command Sgt. Major Robert Jenks of Millerton (left) congratulates division Soldier Sgt. Holly Lindstrom, of Buffalo, after giving her a sergeant major's coin torecognize her efforts during Yama Sakura 57,an annual, bilateral command post exercise that simulates Japanese-United States military operations required to defend Japan now underway. Lindstrom is working in the division planning section and runs the Common Operating Picture, a computer system which gives the commanding general and command staff a real-time picture of the battlefield. Jenks said Lindstrom is working in a job that is above and beyond her pay grade.

Yama Sakura Begins for Rainbow Division

N.Y. National Guard Soldiers Are Off The Wall

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. - Before heading out to complete a land navigation course at Camp Smith, Spc. Peter D. Haas, 42nd Infantry Division, and former Soldier with the 56th Personnel Services Battalion had some fun and learned how to rappel off a 60-foot tower. Haas got off the wall pretty far as other Soldiers watch below. Haas recently tranferred to the 42nd Inf. Div. due to the recent deactivation of the 56th.

Aviation Soldiers Come Home

LATHAM -- New York Army National Guard Sgt. Benjamin Seeger is greeted by his wife Andrea and 2-year old daughter Rachel, as he returned home to the Army Aviation Support Facility, May 23, after completing one-year of active duty for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Seeger, and more than 160 members of the New York Army National Guard's 3rd Battalion, 142nd Assault Helicopter Battalion served in Iraq for nine months, returning to the United States last weekend and completing their demobilization tasks. The Capital District welcomed home more than 60 of these Soldiers this weekend. The battalion, headquartered near Long Island's Islip MacArthur Airport at the New York Army National Guard's Ronkonkoma Army Aviation Support Facility, also has a flight company near Albany International Airport in Latham, N.Y.

New Leadership for 42nd Infantry Division

CAMP SMITH TRAINING SITE--The Troy-based 42nd Infantry Division welcomed its new commander in a formal military ceremony Sunday, May 3. Iraq War veteran Brig. Gen. Steven Wickstrom took the responsibility of command of the New York Army National Guard's 42nd Infantry Division in a change of command ceremony in front of divisional troops at Camp Smith, near Peekskill, N.Y. The New York Army National Guard's 42nd Infantry Division Headquarters, based in Troy, N.Y., is one of only eight Army National Guard combat division headquarters in the nation. It was the first National Guard divisional headquarters called to active duty for combat operations in Iraq since the Korean War. The division served as the Multinational Divisional Headquarters for North Central Iraq during the Iraqi Constitutional Referendum vote in 2005. Brigadier General Steven N. Wickstrom, incoming commander of the Army National Guard's 42nd Infantry (Rainbow) Division. Wickstrom has served in numerous leadership and staff positions in his 28-year career as an officer in the Army National Guard. He is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and previously served as the Deputy Commanding General of the 42nd Infantry Division. Wickstrom took command from Brig. Gen. Paul C. Genereux, Jr., the division commander from April 2006 and formerly the division's deputy commander for combat operations during the unit deployment to Iraq in 2005.

Rainbow Soldiers Take Aim at Weapons Qualification

Todd Balog conduct 9mm pistol qualification training here March 5 as part of the 42nd Infantry Division Special Troops Battalion warrior skills training. Approximately 300 "Rainbow Division" Soldiers from the division's headquarters company, tactical command posts and network signal company travelled to the Fort Pickett training areas to conduct weapons qualification along with individual and section training where recent heavy snows made the terrain very familiar to the New York Soldiers.

Fallen Guardsman Honored by NYPD and Military

New York City--Major General Joseph Taluto, the Adjutant General and Commander of the New York National Guard and Brig. Gen. Paul Genereux, Jr., the commander of the 42nd Infantry Division (Center) salute as the remains of New York Army National Guard Sgt. Deon Taylor pass by during funeral observances on Thursday, Nov. 6. Taluto and Genereux joined other Army and New York Police Department dignitaries, include Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and New York City Major Michael Bloomberg, at Manhattan's Riverside Church to honor Taylor. Taylor, a member of the New York Police Department since 2005, and the Army National Guard since 2001, was killed in action in Afghanistan on October 22 when an improvised explosive device destroyed his humvee. He was deployed with the 27th Brigade Combat Team which is training the Afghan National Army and Police

Remembering 9-11 Promise to Students

Tenth grade students from Hancock Central School hold up a 3-by-14 foot banner displaying ?KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK? and signed by the then 3rd graders, faculty and other students. The banner was taped to donations sent to Soldiers working 18-hour shifts supporting rescue and recovery efforts at ?Ground Zero? following the World Trade Center attacks in 2001. The banner was returned nearly seven years later by retired Sgt. 1st Class Delbert Higgins, 42nd Infantry ?Rainbow? Division during a school wide 9-11 Remembrance ceremony on Sept. 11, 2008. Higgins kept his promise to say thank you to roughly 35 youngsters who demonstrated concern and ultimately motivated Soldiers during a difficult time.

National Guard Women Highlighted in Cohoes Exhibit

Cohoes, NY -- Cohoes High School student Kourtney Hebert tries on Individual Body Armor or IBA belonging to Staff Sgt. Karin Coons of the 42nd Infantry Division in Troy, NY. The Cohoes High School toured the new exhibit at the Cohoes Visitors Center which highlights the accomplishments of area women who have served in the military and are currently serving in the New York Army and Air National Guard. The exhibit is sponsored by The Spindle City Historic Society of Cohoes and Cohoes Remembers Vets with the assistance of the New York National Guard and the Foundation of New York State Nurses. The exhibit illustrates the opportunities afforded to women in the military and reveals the contributions made through their military service as camp followers, in the Army and Navy Nurse Corps, National Guard and Women?s Air Force Service Pilots (WASPS). The exhibit will be available for view at the Cohoes Visitor?s Center, 58 Remsen Street, the ground floor of the Cohoes Music Hall from June 3 ? 27, 2008; hours are 11am to 4pm, Tuesday through Friday. There is a special evening showing from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday June 5, 2008.

Trees, Troops and Families

Staff Sergeant Daniel Brunner, a N.Y. Army National Guard Citizen Soldier with the 42nd Infantry Division, passes a donated Christmas Tree to fellow volunteer 1SG Tony Coluccio at Ellms Farms in Charlton, N.Y. on November 28. The trees are part of a donated shipment for DoD installations in the U.S. and across the globe as part of the "Trees for Troops" charitable donations for 2007. Brunner voluteered his time on November 28 to help other area veterans and military famiily members in loading more than 150 trees for shipment at Ellms Tree Farms in Charlton, N.Y.

Tax-Free Re-enlistment for Rainbow Soldiers

Soldiers of the Army National Guard's 42nd Infantry Division renew their enlistment vows while deployed to Cairo, Egypt in support of the 2007 Bright Star exercise Nov. 12, 2007. Each Soldier received a tax-free bonus of $15,000 for re-enlisting.
