" New York Army National Guard Soldiers from Battery A, 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery Regiment from New Windsor, N.Y., perform an exercise gun fire drill on their M119A2 howitzer here Oct. 16. The NTC training rotation, through late October, provides Soldiers from the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team with a realistic, demanding training environment. The exercise stresses leaders, Soldiers and staffs in a simulated combat environment. The Soldiers are training here as part of the unit’s preparations for mobilization and deployment to Afghanistan with the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in early 2012. About 1,500 of the Soldiers are currently scheduled to deploy.

FORT SILL, Ok. - The New York Army National Guard welcomed five new field artillery officers following graduation of the Field Artillery Basic Officer Leader"s Course here Jan. 11. NEW YORK - New York Army National Guard Lt. Col. Michael Hoblin, left, commander of the 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery in Jamaica, presents the Saint Barbara Order of the Field Artillery to Marisol DeJesus, mother of Sgt. Dayana Portela here Dec. 11. Portela posthumously received the Saint Barbara award after passing away suddenly from a rare form of cancer at the age of 27 on Oct. 26, 2010. Portela distinguished herself as a Supply Clerk and Armorer assigned to Company G, 427th Forward Support Battalion in support of the field artillery battalion. She demonstrated exemplary performance of her duties by recently completing over 15 lateral transfers, moving over 1 million dollars worth of equipment, relaying and recording all logistical operations that was vital to the success of the unit. Portela was also a serving Soldier with Joint Task Force Empire Shield, the New York National Guard’s standing security task force in New York City. Portela served in a key position as a Force Protection Specialist to support the unit mission to detect, deter, and prevent potential terrorist operations. Dima, a Romania immigrant and Army Reserve member who was killed in action in Baghdad on Nov. 13, 2004. Dima was a member of the Army Reserve's 411th Engineer Brigade. The New York Army National Guard's Battery A, 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery and 1569th Transportation Company are also based at the center.

JAMAICA -- Rose McKay (seated at left), son Shane and daughter Tanisha (seated at right) gather July 10 with comrades from the 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery to receive an artist's print of their loved one killed in Afghanistan last year serving with the New York Army National Guard. Joseph McKay was among 1700 members of the New York National Guard's 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team that were mobilized and deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 as combined Joint Task Force Phoenix VII. Sergeant First Class McKay, Specialist Mark Palmateer from Poughkeepsie and Sergeant First Class Matthew Hilton of Livonia, Michigan were killed in an ambush on their convoy on June 26th 2008 when and Improvised Explosive Device struck their vehicle in Eastern, Afghanistan. He was a career New York National Guard Soldier who first joined in 1977 and served continuously until his death last year. He was a naturalized American citizen from Guyana, South America and lived with his wife and two children in Queens. Texas artist Phil Taylor and his wife Lisa of the American Fallen Soldiers Project presented Mrs. Rose McKay with a portrait of her late husband Joseph at a special ceremony at the Soldier's former armory in Jamaica Queens on July 10. The American Fallen Soldiers Project is a 501? 3 non-profit organization committed to honoring the memory of fallen military personnel by presenting the next of kin with custom portraits of their late loved one at no cost. Members of the New York Army and Air National Guard, and the all-volunteer New York Guard, teamed up with FDNY to practice the skills they would employ jointly in extracting victims from a building hit be a terrorist attack or a suspect explosion. More than 500 members of the New York National Guard took part in the exercise which ran from May 2 to May 4.
