 “Excelsior’s Standards”
New York State Capitol
October 2009 – May 2010

This exhibition showcases the New York State Excelsior Brigade and the Civil War battle flags carried by the brigade’s founding regiments. Each flag honors the 8,000 volunteers who served in the brigade organized by the controversial New York City politician, Daniel Sickles, and named for the state’s motto. Excelsior’s Standards memorializes the men who bore the brigade’s flags and presents these tangible emblems that bound its citizen soldiers together.
