“United Under the Flag” New York State Capitol This exhibition celebrates New York State’s cultural diversity by showcasing ten conserved battle flags carried by ethnic regiments during the Civil War. Each flag is a silent testimonial to the heroism displayed by over 120,000 foreign-born immigrants, free black men, and Iroquois from the Empire State who selflessly defended our liberties and preserved our Union. This exhibit not only memorializes New York State’s diverse citizen soldiers, but also presents the preserved, tangible reminders of their sacrifice and the revered symbols of their patriotism. The ten flags included within “United Under the Flag” are: 79th Regiment New
York Volunteer Infantry – national color
