Prepare to be tired, JRTC vets tell first-timers

FORT POLK -- A sweat-soaked Soldier of the New York Army National Guard's 27th Brigade moves through the Army's Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) at Fort Polk, Louisiana during the brigade's war-fighting exercises there in August, 2001. The unit, now designated the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT), is heading there again for war-fighting exercises in July. Heroism Recognized

SYRACUSE-Seven Soldiers and Civilians were awarded the New York State Conspicuous Service Medal at 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team headquarters here on Saturday, Oct. 17 to recognize the role they played in rescuing New York Army National Guard Capt. Timothy Neild from a fiery automobile crash on Dec. 9, 2013. Recognized were: Sgt. 1st Class Raymond Presley, who received the Soldiers Medal; Sergeant John Tirinato, of Castleton, who also received the Soldiers Medal and the New York State Conspicuous Service Medal; and civilians Thomas Buckle of Syracuse; Kevin Harrigan of Syracuse; Sherry Kline of Syracuse, Joseph Krywalski of Liverpool; Dr. Christopher Sewell of Woodbridge, CT; and Kevin Shier of Toronto, Ontario. The civilians all received the New York State Conspicuous Service Medal.

Final Honors for WWII MIA Soldier

ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY, WASHINGTON - World War II veteran Pfc. Bernard Gavrin, a former member of the New York Army National Guard’s 105th Infantry Regiment, is laid to rest with full military honors here September 12. Gavrin was listed as missing in action in Saipan following the July 7, 1944 infamous suicide attack by Japanese forces, considered the largest banzai attack of the war. Gavrin’s remains were recovered in September 2013 from an unmarked burial site by a Japanese non-governmental organization interested in recovering Japanese Soldiers from the battle in Saipan. The remains were handed over to the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command which identified them as Pfc. Gavrin. Along with family members, former New York Army National Guard Soldiers of the 105th Infantry, including Lt. Cols. Michael Murphy and Christopher Panzer and Maj. Paul Hernandez. Yellow Ribbon for Returning Troops

Base Defense Team Deploys to Kuwait

CAMP SHELBY MS--New York Army National Guard Soldiers of the Base Defense Operations Cell (BDOC) pose outside the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum here. Keeping Things Running at Fort Drum

Sixty-one Soldiers participated in the live-fire exercise as the 27th gears up for a possible deployment to Afghanistan. The Javelin is the Army’s latest generation infantry anti-tank weapon, capable of knocking out a tank, or busting a bunker more than two kilometers away.

Guard Helps Present WWII Vet Overdue Medals

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- New York Army National Guard Sgt. James Ader from the 501st Ordnance Battalion (Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD) congratulates John Sidur after he was presented long overdue recognitions 65 years after his actions in the Pacific during WWII. Sidur, a lifelong Cohoes native a former member of the National Guard’s 27th Infantry Division, received his Purple Heart and New York State Conspicuous Service Star for actions on Okinawa during a family ceremony here August 15. Both Soldiers served in upstate New York’s 105th Infantry Regiment. Ader continues the lineage of the infantry regiment after reorganization this decade into the 501st EOD.

27th BCT Shows in Syracuse Parade

SYRACUSE - New York National Guard Soldiers from the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team march in the annual Syracuse Veteran's Parade, Saturday, Nov. 7. Elements from the NewYork Air National Guard's 174th Fighter Wing also marched, and F-16C fighters conducted a flyover during the parade. Elements from the United States Marine Corps Reserve, US Army, and Army ROTC joined dozens of Veterans groups and marching bands in the parade. The annual parade drew large crowds and local dignitaries in an early observance of Veteran's Day, Nov. 11.

Chairman of Joint Chiefs Meets Troops

Mullen conducted a six-day tour of the region to visit troops and host a USO contingent including NFL All-Pros Drew Brees, quarterback of the New Orleans Saints, and Osi Umenyiora, defensive end for the New York Giants, as well as the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders. Moving Out With MRAP's

A Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle operated by a New York Army National Guard Police Mentoring Team from Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix lines up for a convoy movement from the Camp Phoenix Motor Pool. The team is commanded by CPT Richard Redmond from Utica and the NCO in charge is SFC Robert Marshall from Watertown. They are members of the 27th Brigade Combat Team, New York Army National Guard. About 1,700 members of the New York Army National Guard are deployed to Afghanistan training the Afghan National Army and Police. The MRAP vehicle offers increased survivability over the M-1114 armored humvee. The Army recently received its 10,000th MRAP.

Police Station Opens in Helmand Province

88 Guard Car Draws a Crowd Across New York

The race car was part of the New York Army National Guard Open House at the Thompson Road Armory in Syracuse on Sunday February 24. The armory is home to the Guard's 27th Brigade Combat Team, currently mobilized in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and preparing to deploy this spring as the lead command and control element for Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix. The unit will train and mentor Aghan army and police forces. In addition to the NASCAR race car, the unit also displayed Army National Guard vehicles and equipment. Morning Maintenance at Fort Bragg

Governor Spitzer Salutes Deploying Soldiers

New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, the Commander in Chief of the New York National Guard, expresses support Tuesday, July 31, for members of the 27th Brigade Combat Team who are due to be deployed in Afghanistan in 2008. The brigade, which is headquartered in Syracuse, NY, will be responsible for training Afghan National Army troops. Approximately 1700 soldiers from around the state will be part of the deployment. Spitzer visited the brigades headquarters at the Thompson Road Armory to thank the soldiers for their service and pledge the support of the people of the state.
