174th Airman recognized for heroism

HANCOCK FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE--New York National Guard Lt. Col. Joshua Carter, an Oswego resident and a member of the 174th Attack Wing, is presented with the New York State Medal for Valor during an award ceremony at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base in Syracuse, NY, Nov. 8, 2023. Carter received the award for his life-saving actions while responding to a car accident last year. Maj. Gen. Raymond Shields, the adjutant general for the State of New York, and Maj. Gen. CHEEKTOWAGA--Airmen assigned to the New York Air National Guards 174th Attack Wing clear snow from a section of the New York State Thruway near Cheektowaga New York on Nov. 19 2022 using an Oshkosh runway clearing snow blower. The two Airmen manning the snow machine were among 60 activited by Gov. Kathy Hochul to help western New York dig out from a major snowstorm which hit on Nov. 18.

MQ-9 Takes Flight at Hancock Field

SYRACUSE--An MQ-9 remotely piloted aircraft operated by the New York Air National Guards 174th Attack Wing takes to the air from the runway at Syracuse Hancock International Airport in Syracuse N.Y. on Wednesday Dec. 162015. This was the first time a military RPA operated from an air field used by both military and civilian aircraft. Hancock Field Air National Guard Base the home of the 174th shares the field with the commercial airport. Until now the wing has only flow its MQ-9 Reaper aircraft from Wheeler Sack Army Airfield at Fort Drum N.Y.

Polish Officials Visit Syracuse Base

HANCOCK AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE-- Polish defense officials get a briefing on the MQ-9 during a visit here on Wednesday, Oct. 29.New York Air National Guard leadership welcomed Poland Minister Czeslaw Mroczek. Minister Mroczek, Poland's undersecretary in charge of defense modernization, and other top Polish Military officials involved in Poland's military procurement programs took a look at the 174th Attack Wing's Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) mission. Poland is developing RPA programs and plans to purchase RPAs over the next few years.

108th Attack Squadron Reactivated in Syracuse

SYRACUSE-- Members of the newly formed 108th Attack Squadron during a ceremony marking the Squadron's reactivation on Oct. 5, 2014 at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base. the 108th Attack Squadron will conduct the MQ-9 training activities-- instructing pilots, sensor operators and mechanics-- which were formerly one of the responsibilities of the 138th Attack Squadron. This change frees the 138th Attack Squadron to focus on operational missions. The 108th was an Air Control Squadron when it was inactivated in 1994.

Air Combat Command Top NCO Visits 174th

FORT DRUM, NY - The 174th Attack Wing hosted the Command Chief of Air Combat Command from Oct. 6-8, 2014. Command Chief Master Sergeant Steve K. McDonald visited the diverse missions across the 174th and the New York Air National Guard. Command Master Sgt McDonald is the enlisted advisor to the commander and staff for the enlisted force stationed at 27 wings, 17 bases and at more than 200 operating locations around the world.

AAFES Senior Chief Visits Hancock Airfield

HANCOCK FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE -- The Senior Enlisted Advisor for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service visited Hancock Field Air National Guard Base on Aug. 22. During his visit, Chief Master Sgt. Tony Pearson toured the Hancock Exchange facility and talked with 174th Attack Wing members about how the Exchange can better serve them. “The Exchange wants to be the first choice for Guardsmen at Hancock Field,” Pearson said. “Exchange prices are remarkably competitive. And, we’re always tax-free. This is a tremendous savings.”

MQ-9 Hangar Opens at Fort Drum

Italian Airmen Graduate from Hancock Field School

Scafuto and Redavide are the first Italian Air Force members to receive formal maintenance training on the MQ-9. They are part of the 100th graduating class from the 174 FW FTD, which is the sole formal MQ-9 maintenance training facility in the U.S. Air Force.

Air Guard MQ-9 Goes Aloft at Fort Drum

FORT DRUM-- An MQ-9 assigned to the 174th Fighter Wing takes to the air for the first time at Fort Drum’s Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield. Working out of its launch and recovery site at Wheeler-Sack the 174th flew its own MQ-9 Reaper for the first time on Tuesday Oct. 18. The 174th has been working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to receive permission to fly and just last week was approved for flying. The fighter wing will fly the remotely piloted aircraft in restricted airspace around Fort Drum to train pilots and sensor operators working from Syracuse’s Hancock Field.

F-16 Farewell at Syracuse

HANCOCK FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Syracuse-- Col. Kevin Bradley, commander of the New York Air National Guard's 174th Fighter Wing Commander taxi's past Airmen, their friends and family members as 174th F-16s take off from the base for the last time on Saturday, March 6. Bradley's F-16, and another plane, left the base during a ceremony marking the end of a 63-year old tradition of manned fighters at the 174th, and then landed at Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield at Fort Drum after touring the state. The planes will be flown to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base from there. The 174th Fighter Wing now operates the remotely piloted MQ-9 Reaper.

Wet Down After a Last Flight

HANCOCK FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Syracuse-- New York Air National Guard Lt. Col. D. Scott Brenton is doused with Champaign by his daughter and Col. Kevin Bradley, the commander of the 174th Fighter Wing, following Brenton's final flight in an F-16C on Tuesday March 2. Brenton is among the select group of pilots who have flown more than 4,000 hours in the F-16. The 174th, which has flown fighters at Hancock field for 63 years will say goodbye to their last two F-16s during a special ceremony on March 6.

Air Guard Boss Receive's Reaper Tour

HANCOCK FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Syracuse--Lt. Gen. Harry M. Wyatt III, Director of the Air National Guard is given a tour of the MQ-9 Reaper on Hancock Field Air National Guard Base on 2 October by Lt. Col. Michael R. Smith, 138th Fighter Squadron Commander. The tour preceded the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the only MQ-9 Reaper Maintenance Field Training Detachment in the U.S. Air Force which is located at the base.

General Gives New York Airman Award

HANCOCK FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Syracuse--U.S. Air Forces in Europe Commander, General Roger A. Brady, presents New York Air NAtional Guard Staff Sgt. Kevin H. Klos with the Air Force Achievement Medal at Hancock Field in Syracuse, NY on 16 Aug. 2009. Klos received the award for outstanding achievement between 1 Aug. 2008 and 13 Sep. 2008. Gen. Brady was in Syracuse to visit the New York Air National Guard's 152nd Air Operations Group. The group's member work closely with United States Air Forces Europe on a regular basis.

Reaper Media Day in Syracuse

HANCOCK FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE- Syracuse-area reporters interview New York Air National Guard Col. John Balbierer about the MQ-9 Reaper, the unmanned attack aircraft the wing is slated to begin operating later this year. Balbierer is the 174th Fighter Wing Maintenance Group Commander. The wing held a media day on Friday,June 26 to educate the local press about the new aircraft. The reporters received a briefing from the Wing Commander, Col. Kevin Bradley, toured the Reaper maintenance training facility that has been constructed on the base and got a chance to see how the Reaper ground control station works

Sighting In on A Win

CORTLANDT MANOR - Tech. Sgt. Christopher Ashley, a member of the 174th Fighter Wing sites in a target during the 30th Annual Adjutant General's Match at Camp Smith Training Site here, April 24, 25 and 26. Ashley took top honors in the weekend event. More than 125 members of New York?s military forces and several neighboring states gathered at Camp Smith Training Site for the shooting match. Individuals and teams from the New York Army and Air National Guard, United States Marine Corps Reserve, US Army Reserve, New York Guard as well as National Guard teams from Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont competed in a variety of M16 Rifle and M9 Pistol shooting matches. Ashley competed in the Pro/Expert Class finished First Place Grand Aggregate Rifle Champion, First Place Close Quarter Combat, First Place Grand Aggregate Pistol Champion and Third Place Reflexive Fire. The 174th Fighter Wing also took the top team award for the fourth straight year finishing First Place Combined Arms Team, First Place Rifle Team and Second Place Pistol Team.

174th Fighter Wing Begins Saying Goodbye to F-16s

An F-16C of the New York Air National Guard's 174th Fighter Wing leaps into the air Tuesday, October 14, en route to Edwards Air Force Base, California, as the unit began saying goodbye to the fighter bombers it has operated since 1988 at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base in Syracuse. The 174th which flew combat patrols in Iraq this summer, is due to being operating the MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicle in 2010.

New York Air Guard Members Return from Iraq

Syracuse, NY--Leaders of the New York Air National Guard and the New York Air National Guard's 174th Fighter Wing greet 174th unit members returning home to Hancock Field Air National Guard Base from Operation Iraqi Freedom on Tuesday, August5. The 174th unit members deployed in early June as part of an Air Expeditionary Force rotation. The wing's F-16C fighters flew air missions in support of ground troops. This is the last deployment that the unit will be flying F-16s. The 174th is due to begin transitioning to the Reaper unmanned, armed aircraft later this year and is expected to be operational with the new unit in 2010.

Air Guard Jets Head for Middle East

An F-16C assigned to the New York Air National Guard's 174th Fighter Wing vaults into the sky from Hancock Field Air National Guard Base in Syracuse early on the morning of June 10. The Air Guard Fighting Falcons are bound for Iraq where they will be stationed in support of ground troops. This is the last rotation with F-16s for the 174th Fighter Wing. The unit will transition to the unmanned MQ-9 Reaper attack aircraft when they return from the deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom

174th Fighter Wing Changes Leaders

Col Kevin Bradley (left) the new commander of the New York Air National Guard's 174th Fighter Wing, puts his name on the "wing plane" as outgoing commander Col. Anthony Basile removes his. Bradley, the vice commander of the Syracuse-based F-16 Wing since 2003, took over from Basile during a May 4 ceremony at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base. The 174th will deploy F-16 fighters to Iraq later this year but will soon begin phasing out the planes and begin operating the Reaper, an armed version of the Predator UAV. Basile is moving on to new duties with New York Air National Guard Headquarters and is slated to become the Commander of the New York Air National when current commander Major General Robert Knauff retires in 2009.
