New York National Guard recalls fallen in Memorial Day Ceremony

LATHAM, N.Y. -- Command Sgt. Major Frank Wicks, the New York National Guard command sergeant major, speaks at a Memorial Day Ceremony held at the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs here May, 20, 2014. More than 200 personnel attended the event, which included a bugler playing "Taps" and a detail of Soldiers who fired volleys to salute the fallen. Holocaust survivor and World War II veteran speaks to New York National Guard Soldiers and Airmen

Holocaust survivor Martin Becker, 87, poses with New York Army National Guard Chief Warrant Officer Heather Ruter, New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs, equal employment manager, following a discussion about his experiences growing up in Germany and escaping Nazi rule during 1939, April 30. The presentation was coordinated by Ruter in observance of Holocaust Remembrance week, April 27–May 4, 2014. The talk focused on a book written by Bruce Chadderton of Auckland, New Zealand, titled “Descent into the Abyss: The Shoah” published in 2012 by the Education Fund, Society of Israel Philatelist, which was dedicated to Becker’s sister, brother-in-law and niece, all murdered during the Holocaust.

National Guard exercises Homeland Response Force

VALHALLA, N.Y. – New York Army National Guard Soldiers from the search and extraction element of the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear enterprise evacuate a simulated casualty during a disaster response exercise here Aug. 9 at the Westchester County Fire Training Center. The CBRN Enterprise, part of the Homeland Response Force Region II, trained here this week to prepare its Soldiers and Airmen to extract casualties from a contaminated incident, provide decontamination to both ambulatory and litter patients and conduct medical triage to assist civil authorities. The scenario for the exercise involved a hazardous chemical spill from a train derailment. SOLDIERS, NCO’S, COMPETE FOR NEW YORK BEST WARRIOR TITLES

Ivan Villanueva of the 442nd Military Police Company and native of Deer park, N.Y., represented the 369th Sustainment Brigade during the 2013 New York Army National Guard’s Best Warrior Competition held here, March 23-24, 2013. Here he works on assembling and disassemblying an M249. Fourteen Soldiers and NCO’’s representing all the major commands in the NYARNG gathered to compete for top homors in three categories: AGR of the Year, NCO of the Year and Soldier of the Year. The NCO and Soldier of the Year go on to compete at the Regional Competition to be held at the Camp Smith Training Site, Cortlandt manor, N.Y., May 14-17.

Task Force Empire Shield Welcomes RAF Bike-Riders to New York City

Members of the New York National Guard’s Joint Task Force Empire Shield joined representatives of the New York Police and Fire Departments in welcoming a British Team that bicycled across the United States to New York on Saturday, June 13. The five-man British Team, two Royal Air Force members and three London Metropolitan Police Officers were riding across the country as a fundraiser for wounded British veterans. The New York National Guard coordinated with New York City Officials to allow the British cyclists to lay a wreath at Ground Zero, where the World Trade Venter once stood.
