New York Guard members complete training

CAMP SMITH- Twenty-one New York Guard volunteers who completed their initial entry training held March 27 to 31, 2023 stand at attention for a final formation at Camp Smith Training Site on March 31, 2023. Completing the training course allows New York Guard members to volunteer for state active duty missions. The New York Guard is a state defense force manned with citizen volunteers who augment the National Guard during state missions.

NY Guard members serve in storm command center

BUFFALO-- New York Guard Staff Sgt. Thomas, the oldest member of the New York Guard present, represented the history of the organization while Rosa, the youngest member, represents its future. The New York Guard is conducting a week-long annual training at Camp Smith which ends on August 20.

World War I NY Guard members honored

SLEEPY HOLLOW- Combined Color Guards from the New York Guard, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection Police, and the Veterans Corps of Artillery, an honorary military organization, present arms during a ceremony honoring members of the New York Guard who died while protecting the New York City water system during World War I on May 1 in Sleep Holly Cemetery. Forty members of the state militia force died from influenza and accidents while protecting the city water system from sabotage.

SLEEPY HOLLOW-- New York Guard Brig. Gen. David Warager speaks on screen during a virtual/ real world ceremony held on May 2, 2021 online and at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery to honor the members of the New York Guard, the state's defense force, who died while protecting the New York City water system during World War I. New York Guard radio team trains

GARDEN CITY-- Members of the New York Guard commo team assemble and work together to cordon off an area, unpack radio equipment and establish three operational field communications stations just as they would had there been a major emergency at the United States Marine Corps training Center in Garden City on June 21, 2018. The three field stations were powered by batteries and solar panels to simulate operations during a loss of power which might affect normal communications methods. The radio operators successfully provided SITREPs to other field communications stations across New York State.

SLEEPY HOLLOW-- New York Guard Acting Commander Colonel David J. Warager delivers remarks at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow N.Y. during a May 6 ceremony commemorating 40 members of the New York Guard who died during the influenza pandemic of 1918 while guarding the New York City water system during World War I. Their names are inscribed on a plaque set in a boulder taken from Bonticon Crag in the Shawangunk Mountains along the line of the aqueduct that they protected. The memorial is constructed on property donated by the Rockefeller family.

CAMP SMITH -- During the 22 April 2017 drill at Camp Smith, CPT Dunbar and WO1 Bashir of the 244th Medical Group conducted a CPR and First Aid certification course for New York Guard service members.While the class was a refresher for some, it was essential that these NCOs and officers practiced life saving skills before reporting to their duties at Annual Training later this year.

The ceremony honors the gallant service of New York Guard Soldiers and New York City Department of Environmental Police predecessors who died protecting the New York City water system from sabotage during World War I. The deaths were a result of the influenza epidemic which swept the world in 1918.

Named after the late Phillip A. Connelly, a former president of the International Food Service Executives Association, the program is comprised of four categories: Active-duty garrison, Active-duty field, Army National Guard field, and Army Reserve field.

New York Guard members Memorialized

SLEEPY HOLLOW-- This Memorial Stone in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery memorializes 40 members of the New York Guard who died during the world wide influenza epedimic in 1918 while on duty guarding the New York City water system. The stone was hewn from the aqueduct quarry in upstate New York by the members of the First Provisional Regiment and placed at a site purchased by William Rockefeller for the burial of those members of the Regiment that were homeless or did not otherwise have a place to be buried. PVT Frank DeCosta, New York Guard is buried there.

New York Guard Officer Recognized

NEW YORK--Major General Robert Wolfe, the commander of the New York Naval Militia, presents the New York State Defense of Liberty Medal to New York Guard Major Michael Lonski on May 23. The award recognizes the support that Lonksi, a trauma psychologist, provided to members of the National Guard and the New York Military Forces in the days following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. New York Guard Trains at Oriskany

New York State Preparedness Training Center -- Oriskany, NY -- New York Army National Guard Pfc. Alexander Ladighin of the 222 Chemical Company and New York Guard Pvt. Jose Castro, of the 88th Brigade, work together to build a decontamination tent during Homeland Response Force training here, May 16. Both decontamination teams train side-by-side to ensure the quickest and most accurate support to civil authorities in the State of New York. In the event of a chemical attack, both teams would be called to active duty by an executive order of the New York State Governor.

NY Guard Remembers Comrade lost on RMS Titanic

MOUNT HOPE CEMETERY, Greenburgh -- Members of the New York Guard’s 88th Brigade Honor Guard present the colors during the opening of the memorial ceremony here April 14 for a former Soldier lost a century ago aboard the RMS Titanic. The memorial commemorated the service of a New York Guard member who perished while serving in his postal duties on the doomed ship 100 years ago. The troops joined two descendents and a postal service representative with local officials to remember the tragedy of the Titanic and the devotion of duty of New York Guard Pvt. William Logan Gwinn.

New York Guard Commander Honored

NEW YORK-- New York Guard Commander Maj. Gen. Fergal Foley is awarded the Old Guard of New York City Medal for long outstanding service to the state of New York at the annual Old Guard Ball, here Jan. 28. During his acceptance speech, Foley explained the mission of the New York Guard and added his vision for the state volunteer force, which augments and supports the New York National Guard as required with manpower and skills. In attendance were various military representatives, both retired and active.

New York Guard Honors Irish Brigade

QUEENS--Members of the New York Guard’s 88th Brigade take part in a ceremony commemorating members of the Irish Brigade who died during the Civil War Battle of Fredericksburg, which took place from Dec. 11-15 in 1862. During the Dec. 11, 2010 ceremony New York Guard members were joined by members of the New York National Guard’s 1st Battalion 69th Infantry, and the Veterans Corps of Artillery, an historic military unit, in placing a wreath at a memorial to the Irish Brigade in First Calvary Cemetery.

New Look for New York Guard

CAMP SMITH-- New York Guard Staff Sgt Jonathan Peebles models the new uniform being worn by members of New York’s state defense force. The modified Army Combat Uniform features a distinctive New York flag patch, black ranger cap, and gray sewn-on name and service tapes to differentiate this uniform from that worn by members of the Army National Guard. New York Guard members had been wearing uniforms based on the Army Battle Dress Uniform which was phased out beginning in 2005. Stocks of that uniform are no longer easily obtainable.

New York Guard Members Observe JFK Exercise

QUEENS -- New York Guard Capt. John Passarotti and Capt. Robert Patterson are briefed in John F. Kennedy International Airport by Joint Task Force Empire Shield Staff Sgt. Ronnie Redfern, a member of the New York Army National Guard on June 29. The two officers toured various terminals where the JTFES performed a surge drill alongside the New York and New Jersey Port Authority Police Department. The New York Guard is a nonpaid all volunteer force, which augments the Army National and Air Guard in state. Currently, there are members of the NYG attached to the element to assist in daily efforts.

New York Guard Band Honors Deploying Troops

HORSEHEADS-- Soldiers of the New York Army National Guard's 827th Engineer company stand at attention on Feb. 21, as the 89th New York Guard Band performs the National Anthem. The band performed at the 827th's deployment ceremony held at the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center in Big Flats, NY. Staff Sgt. Theodore Albright, Master Sgt. Jeffrey Mancuso and Staff Sgt. Norma Billings of Headquarters Co., 204th Engineer Battalion, stand at attention as NY Guard Sgt. Joseph Baldanza, Spec. The 827th Engineer Company specializes in building and repairing roads, and are mobilizing for deployment to Afghanistan. The 89th NY Guard Band performs at military ceremonies throughout the state, and has been called upon to augment the NY National Guard's 42nd Infantry Division Band. The New York Guard is a state-only volunteer force which assists and augments the New York National Guard.

New York Guard is A Family Tradition

Standing by Private Schur are (left to right) his sister Nina, father Steven, mother Sonya, uncle Michael Havraniak, (front row left to right)brother Mark, grandmother Emily, and Sgt. Maj. Szczur's fiancee Yvanna Iannelli. Sgt. Maj. Szczur, a former United States Marine Corps sergeant, has served in the NY Guard since 2001. He recruited his brother Lubamyr and sister Sophia into the service, and now his nephew Michael. Newly enlisted NY Guard Private Michael Schur is active in community affairs, having made two trips to Mexico and one to Haiti with his church group to aid the poor of those nations. He is also active with the Boy Scouts of America. Michael plans on applying to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

During the honorary formation, the five cover bearers furnished the head gear of the United States Marine Corps, Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard, representing men from each branch who were not in attendance. The Gala is an annual event held to promote camaraderie and fellowship among the state's service members from the NY Guard, the NY Naval Militia, Division of Military and Naval Affairs, and the Office of Homeland Security, during the holiday season.

New York Guard Members Getting Fit

CAMP SMITH--Brooklyn resident Brian Ayala, age 20, does morning physical training as he goes through the New York Guard's one-week basic training course for new recruits. The New York Guard is an volunteer, unpaid state-only force, which augments and assists the New York National Guard during training and in state emergencies. The New York Guard is conducting week-long schools for new recruits, non-commissioned officers, and company officers at Camp Smith Training Site near Peekskill, July 20-25.

New York Guard Training at Guilderland Range

GUILDERLAND--Members of the New York Guard's Task Force 10 put the finishing touches on a pavilion they erected at the Guilderland Weekend Training Site near Albany, on Tuesday, July 21. The members of the volunteer force, which augments and supports the New York Natonal Guard, are spending their week-long Annual Training installing improvements at the training site, which is used by the New York Army and Air National Guard for weapons training and by the New York State Police and local law enforcemnet agencies. Other New York Guard members are doing similar work at the New York National Guard training site in Youngstown, Niagara County.

Governor Paterson Promotes State Force Head

New York City-- New York Governor David Paterson pins two-star rank on New York Guard Commander Major General Fergal Foley, the commander of the New York Guard, the state's volunteer, unpaid force which augments the New York National Guard and assists with operations and training. State Major General Foley retired from the New York Army National Guard as a Colonel in 2006. He assumed command of the New York Guard this year and his promotion was recently confirmed by the New York State Senate. The New York Guard, one of 26 Congressionally-authorized state defense forces, provides National Guard forces with additional skills and manpower when training, preparing for mobilization, and in state emergencies.

Marching in Memory of the Past

SLEEPY HOLLOW--The 89th New York Guard Band, led by Capt. Douglas Hedwig, marches into place at the 91st Annual 1st Provisional Regiment, NY Guard memorial service to honor forty original New York Guard volunteers who died of the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic while on state active duty guarding New York's aqueduct system. Today's New York Guard honors the memory of those volunteers each year with a ceremony at the New York Guard Memorial in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. The New York Guard is one of the components of the New York Military Forces. Unlike the New York National Guard the New York Guard cannot be federalized and serves only within the boundaries of New York State.
