NEW YORK--Major General Robert Wolfe, the commander of the New York Naval Militia, presents the New York State Defense of Liberty Medal to New York Guard Major Michael Lonski on May 23. The award recognizes the support that Lonksi, a trauma psychologist, provided to members of the National Guard and the New York Military Forces in the days following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. The ceremony took place on the HMCS Iroquois. The Canadian destroyer was docked in New York for Fleet Week ceremonies. The New York Guard is the state’s volunteer defense force.
