JROTC cadets train with Air National Guard

GABRESKI AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE --Fourteen Junior ROTC cadets from Long Island schools pose for a photo with simulated rifles, in front of the New York Air National Guards 106th Rescue Wings Operations Group headquarters on July 21 2023 at F.S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base in Westhampton Beach, during the last day of a four-day training camp conducted by Airmen from the wing for the cadets. This is the first time the wing has hosted this event. The cadets conducted training in tactical combat casualty care took the Air Force physical fitness test and trained in survival and navigation and learned about aircraft maintenance.

106th Airmen search for missing submersible

OVER THE ATLANTIC--New York Air National Guard Master Sgt. Rich Cestaro, the 106th Rescue Wing ground Superintendent, scanning the the Atlantic from the window of an HC-130J Combat King II search and rescue aircraft for a submersible which went missing while diving on the wreck of the Titanic on June 21, 2023.Several Airmen were scanners looking for the missing Titan submarine in support of the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard declared that the craft had imploded on Sunday, June 18 on Thursday, June 22.

The wing flew search missions on June 19, 20 and 21 in support of the Coast Guard directed search.

106th conducts at sea medical drop mission

OVER THE ATLANTIC--New York Air National Guard Technical Sgt. Steven Benza, a loadmaster, and Chief Master Sgt. Craig Connor, a flight engineer, who are both assigned to the 106th Rescue Wing, work to assemble a medical supply cargo drop during a mission into the North Atlantic on May 20, 2022. The 106th Rescue Wing launched a mission to drop medical supplies to the crew of the French-registered sailboat Namah which was sailing from France to Panama and was 1,200 east of Long Island. A crewmember had second degree burns and the crew required supplies to treat her.

New Gate Guardian for 106th Rescue Wing

WESTHAMPTON BEACH- Air National Guard members move the HC-130 dubbed "The Spirit of Long Island" into position as a "gate guardian" for F.S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base in Westhampton Beach, New York on August 16, 2021. The aircraft, which saw service during the Vietnam War, was taken out of service in 2019. The aircraft's wings were removed for the move and will be assembled at its final position. Flyover Salutes Long Island

106th Rescue Wing conducts Long Island flyover

A search and rescue plane and two rescue helicopters assigned to the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing will conduct a flyover around Long Island on Friday, May 15 to salute healthcare, essential workers and first responders dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. The flyover, which will begin at 12p.m. over Westhampton Beach, and will conclude by 2 p.m. after making a circuit of eastern Long Island, will feature one of the wing's HC-130J search and rescue aircraft and two HH-60G rescue helicopters flying in formation.

ALPENA, Michigan-- U.S. Air Force HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter from the New York Air National Guards 101st Rescue Squadron prepares to take off for a combat search and rescue training mission during Northern Strike 19 at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center Mich. NEW YORK-- Air Force doctors negotiating a tactical course at the New York Police Departments Rodman's Neck Outdoor Range administer treaterment to a simulated casualty on January 18 in The Bronx New York. Doctors from several Air Force and Air National Guard rescue wings and special operation squadrons took part in the two week Air Force Special Warfare Medical Officer training course which was conducted by the New York Air National Guards 106th Rescue Wing from Jan. 7 to 18. The tactical training exercise at Rodmans Neck was the climax to the course.

106th Rescue Wing makes save

LUMBERTON, N.C.-- Pararescue Airmen Tech Sgt. Ryan Dush and Staff Sgt. Griffin Elzey, both members of the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing, are lowered out of a HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter assigned to the wing during a rescue mission in Lumberton, North Carolina on Sept. 17, 2018 in this still from a helmet mounted video camera. The two Airmen were descending to make an assessment of how many people were in the house, surrounded by flood waters and the best way to get them out. Eventually 15 people were rescued by two HH-60s, one flown by New York Air Guardsmen and the other by an aircrew from the California Air National Guard's 129th Rescue Wing.

St. MARTIN-- Americans stranded on St. Martin following Hurricane Irma fill the bay of an HC-130 assigned to the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing on Sept. 9, 2017 during an evacuation mission. The wing deployed 130 Airmen, 3 HHK-60 Pave Hawk helicopters and 2 HC-130s to Puerto Rico to assist in search and rescue missions.

Guard Airmen Train in Hazardous Response

PERRY GA - New York Air National Guard Airman First Class Bryan Chang an emergency manager from the 106th Rescue Wing strips off his Level A hazardous material suit during exercises on the first day of exercise Global Dragon here on March 9 2015. Airmen trained in Level A Hazardous Material suits used their equipment to test for chemical biological radiological and nuclear (CBRN) contamination. The training emphasized coordination within small teams with each airman working to support their wingman to accomplish the mission. Exercise Global Dragon is a two-week long course taking place at the Guardian Center in Perry Georgia. The Guardian Center houses several training fascilities that simulate demolished city blocks flooded towns and CBRN-contaiminated areas.

Emergency Preparedness Training on Long Island

STONY BROOK New York- Members of the 106th Rescue Wing assists with the registration and distribution of disaster prepardness material . The September 20th one day course that was held at Stony Brook University. The lecture included information on how civilians can prepare themselves and their families for natural disasters and help mitigate life threatening emergencies while waiting for authorities to arrive. Lectures ended with a certificate and book bags of first aid material being given to each member that attended. This was a New York state wide initiative by the Governors office for the month of September which is Disaster Preparedness Month.

JONES BEACH, N.Y.-- Six pararescue jumpers frm the New York Air National Guard's 103rd Rescue Squadron prepare to exit an HH-130 flown by the 102nd Rescue Squadron during the annual Jones Beach Air Show on Saturday, May 24. The 106th Rescue Wing units normally stag a jump as part of the annual air show but couldn't participate in 2013 because of federal budget cuts. 106th Landmark Demolished in Training Exercise

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY -- New York Air National Guard members of the 106th Rescue Wing begin the work of dismantling an F-102 Delta Dagger which had been a display aircraft at the F.S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base gate here on Oct. 21. The aircraft, which was once flown by the 106th when it was an interceptor group, was damaged during Hurricane Sandy. 106th Rescue Wing maintainers and pararescue men practiced raising the aircraft off the ground and cutting into it as an exercise in rescuing injured aircrew before finishing the demolition.

New York FireFighters Serve With Air Guard

CAMP BASTION, Afghanistan-- (From left) New York Air National Guard Capt. Shaun Cullen, Capt. Tripp Zanetis, Tech. Sgt. Jim Denniston and Tech. Sgt. Erick Pound are all members of the 101st Rescue Squadron, an element of the 106th Rescue Wing, currently assigned to the 26th Expeditionary Rescue Squadron, take turns “busting each other’s chops,” following shift-change at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan Nov. 29. They are all firefighters when not activated. Cullen, the aircraft commander, is assigned to Engine 54, in Midtown Manhattan; Zanetis, the copilot, is assigned to Ladder 11 in Lower East Manhattan; Pound, the aerial gunner, is assigned to Engine 58 in Harlem; and Denniston, the flight engineer, is assigned to Engine 285 in Queens. Together at the 26th ERQS, the team makes-up Pedro 24, a quick-response HH-60 Pave Hawk medical evacuation crew.

PJs Test Marksmanship Skills

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY -Pararescue Jumpers test their marksmanship skills on the range at FS Gabreski Air National Guard Station during a weeklong Pararescue Rodeo being hosted this week by the 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard. Teams from across the country are participating. PJ Stands for Pararescue Jumper, the specialists trained to jump into water or hostile terrain to retrieve downed Airmen. The weeklong competition simulates real world scenarios testing the core skill sets of each rescue team. Event scenarios include Tactical Combat Casualty Care, Military Free-fall and Static-line parachuting Operations, Tactical Carbine and Pistol marksmanship, Zodiac Boat Operations, Maritime Navigation and High Angle / Confined-Space Rescue Operations. The competition works to foster teamwork, and esprit de corps among the Guardian Angels.

Homeland Response Force Exercise Begins

NEW YORK STATE PREPAREDNESS TRAINING CENTER, ORISKANY, N.Y. -- Airman 1st Class Kevin Gwinn of the Long Island based ANG 106th Security Forces Squadron checks identification at the initial check point at the NYS Readiness Training Center, here May 15. The all-hands NY State military forces Homeland Response Force training is held in preparation for various disaster scenarios, ensuring the best response in the event of an emergency. The National Guard Homeland Response Force for FEMA Region II deploys here today and will validate its ability to respond to Chemical, Biological, Radiological or Nuclear incidents using this rubble pile as a training site later this week. More than 700 members of the force will train at the Oriskany site or at the New York National Guard Armory in Utica, N.Y.

Woman World War II Pilot Visits 106th Rescue Wing

WESTHAMPTON BEACH--Eleanor C Faust, a Womens Air Force Service Pilot (WASP) during World War II visits the 106th Rescue Wing at F.S. Gabreski Air National Guard Station on April 10, 2012. Faust visited the wing along with members of the Civil Air Patrol. She spoke to the cadets about her experiences. During World War II WASP members acted as test pilots, ferried aircraft around the country and towed aerial gunnery targets.

Long Island Airmen in the Deep Snow

PITTSBURGH, NH-- Para rescue "Guardian Angles" from the New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing practice transporting an injured victim through deep snow during snow rescue training conducted with local volunteer firemen here on Friday, February 4. Based at Westhampton Beach, NY, the members of the 103rd Rescue Squadron are trained to extract aircrew downed behind enemy lines and conduct rescue operations in all terrain and weather situations. Fog Bound Guard Planes

WESTHAMPTON BEACH-- Fog envelops the tarmac at Francis S. Gabreski Airport, the home of the New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing, on Wednesday Feb. 2. While the Hudson Valley and Upstate New York got hit with snow and sleet, warmer temperatures converted snowfall into fog on Long Island, where the wing is located. The 106th Rescue Wing operates HC-130 search and rescue aircraft and HH-60 Pavehawk rescue helicopters.

106th Rescue Wing in South Africa

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA--Members of the New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing from Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base, Westhampton Beach, N.Y., unload an HH-60 Pavehawk from a C-17 Globemaster III at Air Force Base Ysterplaat, South Africa Saturday Sept 18. The Pavehawk and Air Guard Airmen will participate at at the Africa Aerospace & Defence (AAD) 2010 exhibition. The event begins Sept. 21 in Cape Town and is Africa’s premier aerospace, general aviation, defense and security expo that includes a world class air show, dynamic vehicle demonstrations and many other static displays. More than 70 members of the New York Army and Air National Guard are participating in the event. The New York National Guard conducts joint training with South Africa through the National Guard’s State Partnership Program. The C-17 Globemaster III known as Heavy Airlift Wing or HAW, from Papa Air Base, Hungary, routinely supports European Union, NATO and U.N. missions with a strategic airlift and global reach capability.

Loadout for South African Air Show on Long Island

WESTHAMPTON BEACH--Airmen from the New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing oversee the loading of an HH-60 Pavehawk Helicopter onto a C-17 Globemaster II cargo plane at Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach, Tuesday. The Pavehawk and more than 20 members of the 106th Rescue Wing are departing for Cape Town, South Africa to participate in Africa’s largest air show as part of the New York National Guard’s State Partnership Program with the South African military. While there, the wing will also be participating in joint search and rescue training while in South Africa.

National Guard Airman Fishes for A Compliment

SMITHTOWN-- New York Air National Guard Tech Sgt. Nate Dean,a member of the 106th Maintenance Operations Flight, displays his first fluke of the day,during the annual Soldiers on the Sound fishing trip organized for military members by the Smithtown Bay Yacht Club on July 24. The fish had to be thrown back because it was too small to keep. Members of the 106th Rescue Wing, from F.S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base, were the majority of participants for the event which paired the Airmen with civilians who took them on their boat to fish. The main fish the members sought to catch was the fluke. Out of the 18 boats which were deployed for the event only four regulation size fish were caught. The winning fluke was caught by SSgt. Derek Wallace, 106th Vehicle Maintenance, and it measured 4 lbs 3 ounces.

Space Shuttle Takes Off Supported by Air Guard

PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Florida--New York Air National Guardsmen from the 106th Rescue Wing watch as Space Shuttle Atlantis blasts into orbit on May 14, as one of the unit's HH-60 Pavehawk's stands ready to launch if a rescue effort is needed. The 106th Rescue Wing supported a Space Shuttle misson for the d107th time on May 14 as Mission STS-132 took off for the International Space Station. The Wing's 101st, 102nd and 103rd Rescue Squadrons each provided different assets to support the Space Shuttle Recovery Program which, in the case of a evacuation by the space shuttle crew, they would have been availble to rescue the astronauts.

Rescue Wing Salutes Medal of Honor Recipients

COPIAGUE, LONG ISLAND, N.Y. -- Members of the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing Color Guard appeared with Army Honor Guard Soldiers at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Copiague, N.Y. March 25 for the National Medal of Honor Day ceremony. The event honored members of the military who were awarded the Medal of Honor for their service and focused more specifically on Medal of Honor recipients from the State of New York. The event was organized by Moe Fletcher and included guest speakers Jim McDonough, Chief Master Sgt. 106th Rescue Wing Supports Haiti Relief Efforts

GUANTANAMO BAY, CUBA -- Airmen from the New York Air National Guard's 106th Civil Engineering Squadron (CES), 106th Rescqu Wing out of Long Island, N.Y., disembark from a plane at U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Jan. 16, 2010. Guardian Angels Show Their Stuff at USS Intrepid

NEW YORK CITY-- Visitors to the USS Intrepid Sea, Air & space Museum watch as members of the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing demonstrate their skills during a special Veterans Day event. The demonstration included a rescue eaturing HH-60s from the 101st Rescue Squadron and Guardian Angels from the 103rd Rescue Squadron. After the event the HH-60s flew over the Veteran's Day parade route and landed on the deck of the USS Intrepid.

New Yorkers Back Up Shuttle Launch for 100th Time

PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Florida -- The crew of "King 2", HC-130 rescue aircraft from the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing, gather for a group photograph on Monday, May 11, as they wait for the launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis. This mission marked the 100th time that Airmen from the Long Island wing provided rescue support to Space Shuttle launches. Joining the HC-130 crews from Gabreski Field Air National Guard Base at Westhampton Beach, New York, were pararescuemen from the California Air National Guard's 131st Rescue Squadron, based at Moffett Federal Airfield, located near Mountain View, California. If the shuttle crew had been forced to leave the spacecraft near the Kennedy Space Center these men would have been responsible for pulling the astronauts from the water.

New York Islander Meets New York Air Guardsman

New York Islanders left wing Jeff Tambellini meets New York Air National Guard Major Kerry McCauley during an October 24 visit to the 106th Rescue Wing at Grabreski Field Air National Guard Base. Tambellini and center Frans Nielsen, toured the base, met with members of the wing and climbed aboard HH-60 Pavehawk rescue helicopters and HC-130 rescue aircraft to learn more about what the wing does. The two players also signed autographs and met with children of wing members as well. The Islanders will hold a military appreciation night during their Nov. 11, Veteran's Day game against the Philadelphia flyers.

Air Guard Hits the Beach

JONES BEACH, N.Y. - Major John D. McElroy and Master Sgt. Jules Roy greet on-lookers who came to the 2008 Jones Beach Air Show after finishing their aerial rescue demonstration. The two para-rescue jumpers of the 103rd Rescue Squadron represented the 106th Rescue Wing by performing a para-rescue demonstration in front of record crowds during the air show at Jones Beach State Park, Wantagh, N.Y. The 106th shared the sky with the Navy's Blue Angels, the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team and an Air Force F-22 Raptor Fighter Aircraft. A record 506,000 visitors attended the two day event.

New York Air Guard Unit Celebrates 100 Years

In this painting from the National Guard historical series, members of the 1st Aero Company, New York National Guard, return from the first mass flight--12 JN-4"Jenny" aircraft-- in U.S. history from Mineola, Long Island to Princeton, N.J. and back, that was conducted Nov. 18-19, 1916. The descendants of the 1st Aero Company, the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing, is based on Long Island today, flying air rescue missions out of Francis Gabreski Airport; the oldest Air National Guard unit in the United States. The 1st Aero Company was organized as an Signal Corps observation balloon company by the New York National Guard on 30 April, 1908. One hundred soldiers gathered in the 71st Regiment Armory in New York City eventually formed the company, which in 1915 switched from balloons to airplanes.

Air Guard Retiree Receives Valor Award

Retired Brig. Gen. Frank Cardile (left) congratulates retired New York Air National Guard Chief Master Sgt. Dennis M. Richardson after presenting Richardson with the Air Force Cross on April 5 at Francis S. Gabreski Airport, Westhampton Beach, N.Y. Richardson was awarded the medal, the Air Force's second highest award for valor, because of his actions during a March 1968 mission to rescue downed Airmen in Vietnam. Col. Michael F. Canders, 106th Rescue Wing Commander, is at right. Cardile, who flew on the rescue mission that Richarson was honored for, praised his heroism and steadfastness under fire. During the mission Richardson stood exposed in the door of an HH-53 "Jolly Green Giant" helicopter to fight off North Vietnamese troops who were attempting to board the helicopter.
