New York Army National Guard Spc. Thomas Kovacs meets with local Afghan children during a mission in January, 2008 with the Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix Embedded Training Team. Kovacs deployed with 16 other National Guard Soldiers from the 27th Brigade Combat Team to mentor, train and support Afghan national army soldiers.
