SLEEPY HOLLOW--The 89th New York Guard Band, led by Capt. Douglas Hedwig, marches into place at the 91st Annual 1st Provisional Regiment, NY Guard memorial service to honor forty original New York Guard volunteers who died of the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic while on state active duty guarding New York's aqueduct system.
Today's New York Guard honors the memory of those volunteers each year with a ceremony at the New York Guard Memorial in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
The New York Guard is one of the components of the New York Military Forces. Unlike the New York National Guard the New York Guard cannot be federalized and serves only within the boundaries of New York State.
