What is the Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty Scholarship (GRFD)?
It is a competitive scholarship offered by Cadet Command, Fort Monroe Virginia and administered by The Adjutant General of New York.
How many GRFD scholarships are available?
There are six (6) GRFD scholarships and one (1) Dedicated ARNG scholarship per year.
What is the difference between the GRFD scholarship and the Dedicated ARNG scholarship?
Cadets receiving the GRFD scholarship must serve eight (8) years in the Army Guard or the U. S. Army Reserve upon commissioning. Cadets receiving the Dedicated ARNG scholarship must serve eight (8) years in the Army National Guard upon commissioning.
What is the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP)?
Participants in the SMP program are drilling members of the New York Army National Guard and contracted ROTC cadets.
Do I have to be a current member of ROTC to compete for a scholarship?
No. But if you are chosen for one of the scholarships you must contract with ROTC as a Simultaneous Membership Program cadet in order to receive the scholarship benefit.
If selected, how long can I receive the scholarship benefits?
The scholarship is for two years.
What are the educational requirements?
You must be enrolled in a 4-year degree producing regionally or nationally accredited college or university. You must have and maintain a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) in your core subjects and a 2.7 GPA in military subjects.
Can I use the GRFD to pursue a graduate degree?
Yes, but you must have only two years remaining for completion of your graduate degree and possess a baccalaureate degree or have a letter of acceptance into a graduate program. All previously stated requirements still apply.
When will the selection board meet?
The selection board will meet no later than 15 May 2002 and will be composed of (at a minimum) the State Education Services Officer or his representative and one member from each of the four (4) ROTC Battalions in based in New York.
When will I be notified if I have been selected for one (1) of the scholarships?
The Adjutant General of New York or the Professor of Military Science at your ROTC Battalion will notify you by mail no later than July 31st of the year of your application for the scholarship.
