Today Show weatherman Al Roker was on board a Coast Guard boat reporting on the story. The Naval Militia assisted by providing a platform for a second camera man covering the story. Patrol Boat 440, which operates as part of Joint Task Force Empire Shield, the security mission in New York, works regularly with the Coast Guard in New York.

At one time goats were carried on sailing ships for their milk. LC-350 is a 35-foot long landing craft style boat made by Munson a Washington State firm. The boat can carry 27 personnel three tons of supplies or a small truck.

LEEDS, N.Y. -- Chief Petty Officer Bob Morisseau of the New York State Naval Militia (NYSNM) tests a newly-installed computerized automatic identification system aboard the NYSNM's upgraded mobile command post at the New York Army National Guard armory here on March 10. The system and computerized map displays real-time information on boat traffic in whatever New York state waterway the militia is operating in. Militia members, New York Guard members and New York Army National Guard communications experts also tested the command post's newly-installed radios here on March 10 and 16. The new features will improve the NYSNM's ability to communicate and coordinate with New York National Guard units. The NYSNM and the New York Guard are part of the New York State defense forces and can be mobilized for state-active duty, as was the case during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The NYSNM is the naval component of the New York State defense forces. Morisseau is from Albany, N.Y.

LATHAM -- New York Naval Militia Capt. Ten Eyck "Trip" Powell presents the 2013 Josephthal Trophy for the Naval Militia Unit of the Year to the New York Naval Militia's Personnel Action Team. The unit was recognized for the work they did mobilizing Naval Militia personnel during Hurricane Sandy and ensuring that Naval Militia personnel were accounted for. Accepting the award is Commander Dave Hawley of Troy, NY. Officers of the New York Naval Militia’s 1st Battalion Naval Reserve Artillery pose for a photograph in 1891, the year the first unit of 15 officers and 190 enlisted Sailors was accepted for duty as part of New York’s Military Forces. The Legislature officially recognized the force on June 23, 1891. Today the Naval Militia comprises more then 2,500 members of the United States Navy Reserve, United States Marine Corps Reserve, United States Coast Guard Reserve who agree to perform state active duty when called and a small core of retired military volunteers. The unique force provides New York with skills learned through their military training and also man a fleet of nine patrol boats that can be employed in support of law enforcement.

BUFFALO-- New York Naval Militia Petty Boatswains Mate 2nd Class Dawn Burgess (left) is awarded the New York State Military Commendaiton medal during a ceremony here at the Navy Operational Support Center by Chief Warrant Officer Philip Slominski. Burgess was honored for her performance as Coxswain onboard Patrol Boat 281 on May 28-31, 2009 as the Naval Militia was supporting the 2009 ESL Air and Water Show in Rochester. Her boat, along with craft from other agencies were tasked with establishing a restricted zone off Ontario Beach so the air show could be conducted safely. On May 31 high seas forced other boats to quit the restricted zone but Burgess was able to maintain station, allowing the air show to continue. Her actions in this case were lauded by the local Coast Guard Station.

NEW YORK CITY--Members of the New York Naval Militia march past the USS New York, the latest addition to the United States Navy, during a ceremony welcoming the amphibious assault ship to New York on Monday, Nov. 2. The ship was constructed with steel from the World Trade Center in its bow to memorialize the New Yorkers killed on Sept. 11, 2001. Members of the Naval Militia and the New York Army and Air National Guard were among those participating in the ceremonies. Brig. Gen. Paul Genereux, commander of the New York Army National Guard and former commander of the 42nd Infantry Division, presented the ship with a "Never Forget" flag flown by the 42nd Infantry Division in Iraq in 2005. The flag, commissioned by the division, commemorates the attack and the deaths that day, Never Forget is the division's motto.

BUCHANAN--An unmanned, radio-controled boat known as a MUSCL, short for Modular Unmanned Surface Craft, Littoral, manuevers in the Hudson River off the Indian Point nuclear plant near New York Naval Militia Patrol Boat 400, on Tuesday, August 4. The MUSCL, a naval version of the anti-IED robots used by EOD technicians in Iraq and Afghanistan, employs television and forward looking infrared radar to examine ships and docks for attached explosives. Civilian experts from the U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Center teamed up with the New York Naval Militia to test the craft in the Hudson River during exercise Trojan Horse, a maritime security exercise run annually by the State University of New York Maritime College.

ROUSES POINT--New York Naval Militia Petty Officer Garrett Aldershoff, a Scotia resident, scans the waters of Lake Champlain on July 25, during an operation supporting the United States Border Patrol. During July the New York Naval Militia assisted Border Patrol members in stopping and inspecting pleasure craft entering the United States from Canada at the very top of Lake Champlain. This is the second year the Naval Milita has assisted in this mission.

NEW YORK CITY-- Rufus Lekala, Harbormaster for the Port of Durban, South Africa, listens to Captain Robert Pouch of the New York Naval Militia explain the capabilities of PB 400 during a visit to New York City on June 5. Lekala was in New York last week as part of a South African delegation participating in a State Partnership Program port security event. As part of that event the South African team met with various interagency partners responsible for the security of New York Harbor. PB400 is one of the New York Naval Militia boats which is on call to conduct harbor security missions and assist the United States Coast Guard when required. In civilian life, Pouch is also a commissioner on the Board of Commissioners of Pilots of New York State.

OFF THE COAST OF LONG ISLAND - The New York Naval Militia's patrol boat PB 440 carried a squad of U.S. Coast Guard boarding team members to an inbound Saudi Arabian ship on Feb. 25 at Ambrose anchorage to be inspected before the ship can enter loading docks in Brooklyn. Recently, the PB 440 and crew were utilized for recovery efforts of U.S. Air flight 1549 that was forced to land in the Hudson River. The New York Naval Militia regularly works with the U.S. Coast Guard in New York Harbor.

Operation Trojan Horse involved multiple city and state homeland security and law enforcement agencies in a maritime response exercise.

FORT MONTGOMERY, N.Y. - Ten Military Emergency Boat Service (MEBS) patrol boats from New York’s Naval Militia form a tactical formation training column on the Hudson River just south of the Bear Mountain Bridge, Orange County, N.Y., Aug. 3, 2008. The Naval Militia recently received its tenth boat to assist in maritime security for New York State in conjunction with other civil maritime authorities and was on the Hudson River for the day to perform multi-boat practice operations such as open-water radio communications and naval intercept/intrusion drills to prevent civilian boat traffic from entering restricted areas. So far this year, MEBS has participated in various state-wide naval operations to include the U.S. Navy “Fleet Week” in New York City, 4th of July on the East River and has recently assisted the U.S Border Patrol on Lake Champlain.

The New York Naval Militia will be assisting U.S. Border Patrol Agents throughout the summer as part of "Mission Lake Champlain".

The crew of the boat, the most modern in the Naval Militia inventory, took the boat from New York harbor, where it normally operates in conjunction with the United States Coast Guard, to the Port of Albany and back to familiarize themselves with the river. The Naval Militia, an element of the New York State Military Forces which conducts maritime operations, has 12 boats that can provide support to civil authorities and conduct security missions on New York waterways. Members of the Naval Militia belong to the Navy, Marine and Coast Guard reserves and agree to do state duty as well. PB 440 is routinely used to ferry United States Coast Guard boarding crews to cargo vessels waiting to enter New York harbor. Coming upriver gives the crew a chance to practice their skilsl and familiarize themselves with a different operating area if they needto conduct missions there, explained Commander Don McKnight, the Office-in-Charge of the Naval Militia's Military Emergency Boat Service.

Major General Wolf, a retired Marine officer, is the commander of the Naval Militia, a force comprised of Navy and Marine Corps Reservists who volunteer to perform state duties. The New York Naval Militia is one of seven state naval defense forces and is the oldest in the United States .
