LATHAM --Chief Warrant Officer 5 William Solmo, the command chief warrant officer for the New York Army National Guard, speaks to fellow warrant officers and others, including Major General Ray Shields, the adjutant general of New York, during a brief ceremony recognizing the 108th birthday of the warrant officer corps on July 9, 2026. The ceremony was held in the main hanger at Army Aviation Suppport Facility 3. The rank of warrant officer was created on July 9th 1918 to recognize specialists responsible for laying minefields to protect harbors. Today warrant officers fill a specialist role in many fields between the non-commissioned officer and officer rank structure. There are 260 warrant officers in the New York Army National Guard.
