Winter brings cold slippery weather which can lead to falls. The New York National Guard Safety office urges National Guard Soldiers and Airmen to pay special attention to fall prevention in November.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 800,000 people are hospitalized each year because of a fall injury; falls are also the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries.
Slips, trips and falls make up 20 percent of all work-related injuries, account for more than 12 percent of workers compensation expenses and cost the government and taxpayers roughly $40,000 per incident.
