NORTHWEST TERRITORIES, Canada-- An LC-130 Hercules "Sjibird" assigned to the New York Air National Guard's 109th Airlift Wing retrieves cargo from a camp on Parsons Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories on March 5, 2024. A team from the 109th were airlanded onto the lake by Royal Canadian Air Force aircrew and proceeded to build an ice runway for the LC-130s on the frozen lake. This is the first time the wing has constructed a "skiway" on frozen fresh water. In the past they have built skiways on sea ice.
The LC-130s flown by the 109th Airlift Wing are the largest tactical aircraft in the world with the ability to land on snow and ice using skis.
